Arsenal have opened talks with Bayer Leverkusen over signing England international Jarell Quansah. The Premier League champions have been keen to sign a defender following the injury to William Saliba and the 23-year-old Quansah, formerly of Liverpool, would be able to cover both centre-back and right back positions.
The Gunners have also received interest in Gabriel Martinelli from Galatasaray, while the he availability of striker Victor Osimhen has been raised in those talks. Arsenal have also been linked with moves for Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez and Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola as Arteta bids to add a marquee signing in attack this summer. Barcola also leads Liverpool’s list of transfer targets and the Reds remain in talks with PSG over a fee,
Meanwhile, Barcelona are set to make a third bid of around £60m for Rodri, but are still set to fall £10m short of Manchester City’s valuation of the Ballon d’Or winner. The deal could yet influence the speed of any move for Enzo Fernandez, with his former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca pushing for the midfielder's signature. Chelsea’s deadline of 5pm on Friday passed without City submitting their £120m bid, and the club expect Fernandez to now stay for the upcoming season.

Elliot Anderson insists Manchester United never came close to signing him
15:40 , Mike JonesElliot Anderson insists he never came close to a move to Old Trafford despite the attempts of some Manchester United players to persuade him while he was on holiday.
The 23-year-old became the most expensive British player in history when his £116m move to City from Nottingham Forest was announced in June during the World Cup before that deal was beaten last month by the £117m Chelsea paid Aston Villa for Morgan Rogers.
United had been reported to have made Anderson their primary transfer target at the end of last season before pulling out of the race for his signature.
When asked about his conversations with some United players on holiday, Anderson said: “I was just golfing in Portugal and bumped into a few and had a nice chat and stuff like that, but I had a decision to make and I chose City.”
Asked if United came close to persuading him to move to Old Trafford, Anderson replied: “No.”

Lewis-Skelly likely to stay at Arsenal
14:00 , Miguel Delaney, Chief Football WriterA deal for Myles Lewis-Skelly to Chelsea is considered highly unlikely.
They [Chelsea] are generally happy with their squad, and will only now move in the event of "reactions" to the market. Hull City have some interest in Tosin Adarabioyo, but he wants to stay.
There is still some puzzlement within Arsenal as to how this has got about. Lewis-Skelly's camp have not been in touch.
There is long-standing interest from Manchester United but the Old Trafford hierarchy do not have the finances right now to even test Arsenal's willingness to keep their teenage star.

Arsenal rekindle interest in Aston Villa's Ezri Konsa?
13:24 , Mike JonesArsenal were initially linked with a centre-back last month following William Saliba’s injury, with Aston Villa centre-back Ezri Konsa one of two players mentioned along with free agent John Stones.
Stones then signed for Inter Milan, with interest in Konsa cooling while Arsenal were then briefly linked in a shock move for Tottenham captain Cristian Romero. Spurs and Atletico Madrid have since agreed a fee for the centre-back.

Jeremy Doku signs new five-year Man City contract
13:12 , Richard JollyJeremy Doku has signed a new five-year contract with Manchester City as he has become the fourth first-team player to agree a new deal this summer.
The winger, who had entered the last two years of his previous contract, will now stay at the Etihad Stadium until 2031.
He follows Phil Foden, Abdukodir Khusanov and Josko Gvardiol in agreeing to stay with City as their squad takes shape for the new season.
Doku, a £55m signing from Rennes in 2023, believes new manager Enzo Maresca’s style of play will suit him as he said it was an easy decision to remain with the FA Cup winners.
Doku said: “It's a privilege. I am so happy that they trusted in me first of all and as well that I can continue to play for this big club. I remember when I arrived here from France a bit of an underdog. Nobody really knew me. I had to prove myself and being able now to sign a new contract shows that they trusted me and that they appreciate how I've been playing.
“I'm very excited to work with Enzo. I've been watching the games the friendly games in Korea and the style of play is very attractive. But already when he was in his previous clubs, I saw this style of play, and it really suits me with the wingers being very aggressive.”

13:00 , Mike JonesMikel Arteta said it is a good sign if clubs are interested in signing Myles Lewis-Skelly but would not confirm whether Arsenal would consider selling the teenager.
The 19-year-old has been linked with Manchester United and Chelsea having struggled for a place in the team that won the Premier League last season.
Arsenal drew 1-1 with Serie A side Como on Wednesday, their final pre-season friendly before the campaign begins with Sunday’s Community Shield against City, with Lewis-Skelly scoring the Gunners’ goal and gesturing while celebrating in front of fans.
“It is good to score a goal, you should be emotional,” said Arteta. “He is a very emotional player, remember when he did the hand gestures (celebrating against City).
“I don’t want to talk about any speculation. If there is speculation about any of our players it is a good sign. It means what we are attracting interest and we are doing a good job.”

Michael Carrick outlines Man United transfer plans
12:24 , Mike JonesMichael Carrick has acknowledged that Manchester United still need to strengthen their squad during the current transfer window, but insists they will not spend at the level of their Premier League rivals.
United have so far spent around £85 million to secure Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Karl Darlow. However, after another summer of heavy spending elsewhere, they remain the only Premier League ‘big six’ side never to have broken the £100m threshold on a player.

Jaissle on taking over at Newcastle
11:36 , Mike JonesDuring his unveiling as the new Newcastle United manager, Matthias Jaissle spoke about the future.
"It's a challenge, a big challenge, always when there's a transitional period. But it's not time to complain, it doesn't make sense to see the negative things," Jaissle said at his unveiling.
"We want to seethe chance in that situation and that's our approach from day one. We are here to do our best job. We want to support the players, the current squad.
“There will be adjustments to see in the coming days, weeks. But for now it's only focused on the daily work, the work we can influence. That's all that matters now."
Have Real Madrid and Barcelona been too opportunistic?
11:31 , Miguel Delaney, Chief Football WriterMan City are holding firm on their own £60m valuation of Rodri, having found Barcelona's initial approach derisory.
The player's camp is said to have been a little baffled by the situation, since he would have expected to have signed for one of the big Spanish two by now. It's all the more curious given his status as the World Cup-winning captain.
There is a sense that both Real Madrid and Barcelona have tried to be too opportunistic here, having seen that City were allowing a long-term legend to leave on good terms.
They still want the right terms.
Chelsea-City relationship not that smooth
11:25 , Miguel DelaneyThe word from the Chelsea training ground is that, since returning from World Cup duty, Enzo Fernandez does not give off the sense of staying around for long. The links with Manchester City have only escalated since The Independent reported it last Friday, with all sides intent on getting a deal done.
Fernandez is Enzo Maresca's top target for the position. Chelsea do currently want £120m - as well as clarity by Friday's 5pm - and the relationship with City is not that smooth right now.

Youri Tielemans reveals he nearly joined Manchester United twice before
11:00 , Mike JonesIt was third time lucky for Youri Tielemans when he joined Manchester United last month.
As a deal to buy Brazil midfielder Ederson stalled, the Red Devils activated a £35m release clause to sign Tielemans from Aston Villa – but the move might have happened years ago for a player previously linked with United several times.
United reportedly considered Tielemans in the summer of 2019 as his loan spell at Leicester from Monaco ended but he instead joined the Foxes permanently. Tielemans was linked with United again in both 2022 and 2023.
Speaking at United’s pre-season training camp in County Kildare, the Belgium international said there had been direct talks in the past.
“There have been two times that I spoke with the club, but it didn’t (come) to anything, so I was just very calm about it,” Tielemans said.
Asked if he thought his opportunity to join United had passed, Tielemans added: “No, listen, I am very calm about it. When a move comes up, then if it needs to happen, it will happen.
“At the times that I have been linked with the club before, it did not happen, but it is what it is. I just keep working, keep doing my thing on the pitch and then it happens.”

10:24 , Mike JonesManchester City have shortlisted Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister as a potential replacement for the outgoing Rodri, according to talkSPORT.
Rodri looks on his way to Barcelona with City already nearing the signing of another midfielder in Ayoubb Bouaddi.
However, City are now looking at a move for Mac Allister, who is seen as an affordable option when compared to other targets Enzo Fernandez and Adam Wharton.
But surely Liverpool would not let him go to one of their Premier League rivals, would they?
Kalvin Phillips on Sheffield United loan
10:12 , Mike JonesKalvin Phillips is back at Sheffield United on a season-long loan.
The Manchester City midfielder joined the Blades on loan in February but played only three games before suffering a knee injury, while he was also sent off in the derby against Sheffield Wednesday.
His statement on the club website read: “This was the move I wanted. My time was spoiled by my last game and the injury after that so I'm here to put that right.
“The squad is similar to what it was last year, I'm happy to see everyone and I'm looking forward to coming back fighting fit.”
Mykhailo Mudryk on the move?
10:00 , Mike JonesChelsea’s Mykhailo Mudryk could be set for a loan spell after his return from a ban. The Ukrainian has featured in part of the Blues’ pre-season tour but could now be loaned out as he builds back to full fitness, with new manager Xabi Alonso saying: “No decision made. We need to assess, he is a special player but it is a special case so we need to be sensitive.”
Coventry City are reported to be among three Premier League clubs interested; manager Frank Lampard is familiar with Mudryk from their time together at Stamford Bridge.
Arne Slot set to stay in club football
09:50 , Mike JonesFormer Liverpool head coach Arne Slot walked away from talks about becoming the new Netherlands boss as he wants to remain in club football.
The Dutchman was sacked in May, 12 months after winning the Premier League, following a disappointing title defence that saw them finish fifth.
Slot was linked with taking over from Ronald Koeman, who resigned after their World Cup last-32 exit to Morocco, but did not get beyond an initial approach.
“At this stage in my career, I prefer to see myself on the training pitch with my players every day, something that is simply not possible in the same way with a national team,” he told Voetbal International.
“And (it is) why I chose not to continue the talks and not to start negotiations on what a possible contract might look like.
“I have enormous respect for the national team and for the KNVB (Dutch Football Association) and can only be positive about the professional manner in which the talks proceeded that week. For now, I believe club football still has a lot to offer me.”
Chelsea confirm Filip Jorgensen loan deal
09:40 , Mike JonesChelsea have confirmed the season-long loan of keeper Filip Jorgensen to sister club Strasbourg, in yet another move between the two sides.
The Dane’s opportunities have been limited in his two years at Stamford Bridge.
A club statement read: “Jorgensen was a key member of the Chelsea side that lifted the UEFA Conference League in May 2025, starting all but one game in the competition. The Denmark international became a Club World Cup winner later that summer.
“Jorgensen featured 12 times last season across four different competitions, playing his part as we reached the semi-finals of both domestic cups.
“We look forward to supporting Filip throughout his time in France.”

A deal in principle has been agreed by both clubs with a price of €50m (£42.7m).
Last season Torres scored 21 goals in 49 appearances in all competitions, providing three assists, and helped Barcelona win the La Liga title.
Chelsea and Man Utd turn down chance to sign Myles Lewis-Skelly
09:20 , Mike JonesThe Telegraph has reported both Chelsea and Man Utd have turned down moves for Arsenal teenager Myles Lewis-Skelly, who faces increased competition both in defence and midfield.
Lewis-Skelly is reportedly keen to fight for his place, while the Gunners value him in the region of £45m, which the Blues and Utd are not prepared to pay.
Liverpool need Bradley Barcola if they want to challenge for title
09:10 , Mike JonesMichael Owen believes Liverpool’s pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola could be pivotal in how they perform in the title race.
“I do think Liverpool need more, but it looks like Barcola is the one they want and it will cost them a huge amount of money to get him in,” Owen told Metro.
“But if they can do that and add more depth, more quality, then they can really challenge for the title.
“Last season at Liverpool wasn’t great, the style of play wasn’t as good as it had been and they conceded far too many goals.
“But Slot leaving and Iraola replacing him means a new style of play. He brings a lot of excitement from the way he played at Bournemouth, but Liverpool are a much bigger club and the pressure mounts up now.”
Mikel Arteta wants to do more business
09:02 , Mike JonesMikel Arteta has said that Arsenal still have targets in the transfer window, but stressed there are “very few” players who can take the Gunners to the next level.
The Gunners have been linked with both Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez and Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola as they bid to add a marquee signing to their attack.
"I think for the margins to improve, there are very few players in the market that are available to do that and bring that to the club,” Arteta said.
He added: "There is more that we want to do because every time we have an opportunity to improve the squad and bring more quality and depth to the squad, we need to do that.”
Tottenham agree deal with Atletico Madrid for Cristian Romero
08:56 , Mike JonesAtletico Madrid have agreed a deal in principle with Tottenham to sign Cristian Romero.

Reijnders heading to Saudi Arabia
08:50 , Richard JollyManchester City are set to sell Tijjani Reijnders to Al Qadsiah after agreeing a £51m deal.
The midfielder has accepted personal terms with the Saudi Arabian club as he will leave the Etihad Stadium after just a year.
City, whose midfield overhaul is continuing, will make a profit on Reijnders, who cost £46.5m when he joined from AC Milan last summer.
And his departure will mean they have brought in around £100m in transfer fees this window, with Nathan Ake’s sale to Fenerbahce and James Trafford’s move to Leeds.
Spurs moving in the right direction with Savinho deal
08:44 , Miguel DelaneyTottenham are moving in the right direction to get a deal done for Man City winger Savinho as they look to continue their squad overhaul under Roberto De Zerbi.
The Independent’s chief football writer Miguel Delaney understands that Spurs are getting closer to an agreement for £65m plus add-ons.
The Brazilian signed for Man City from French side Troyes for a little over £30m in the summer of 2024 and is still only 22 years old.
Spurs have already recruited Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes, Jan Paul van Hecke, Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, Martin Dubravka and Cole Ramsey in a busy, expensive summer of business so far, with Chelsea the only Premier League side to spend more in this window.
Man City 'reject' second Rodri bid and in talks over Reijnders
08:38 , Mike JonesWe could be set for a fascinating couple of days for Manchester City and Chelsea.

It comes as Barcelona press to sign Rodri, with Sky Sports News reporting that City have turned turn a second bid of £55m for the World Cup winner.
Meanwhile, Sky Sports News also add that City are in talks with Saudi Pro League side Al Qadisah over a deal for Tijjani Reijnders, said to be in the region of £50m.

Luis Enrique refuses to be drawn on Bradley Barcola's future
08:32 , Mike JonesParis Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique has refused to comment on Bradley Barcola’s potential summer switch to Liverpool.
The 23-year-old, who scored three goals for France at the World Cup, is back with the PSG squad for Wednesday’s Super Cup showdown against Europa League winners Aston Villa in Salzburg.
And when quizzed about Barcola’s future, Luis Enrique said: “I don’t know and I don’t want to speak about any player individually.
“Because it’s always dangerous when you are asking something positive or negative about a player. I stay focused on my team.”
Barcola only returned to Paris last Monday, along with PSG’s other French and Spanish players who were at the World Cup, but could still feature against Villa.
Liverpool play waiting game over PSG's Bradley Barcola
08:26 , Mike JonesGiveMeSport’s Ben Jacobs reports that if PSG sign one or more new attackers this window, Liverpool expect them to be willing to sell the Frenchman for under €170m (£145m).
Liverpool are prepared to wait in order to get the price as low as they can and have seemingly moved away from their other PSG target, Ibrahim Mbaye, due to the cost it would be to sign both players.
PSG have already signed midfielder Maghnes Akliouche from Monaco for €50m but they would need a winger or striker before being willing to drop the price for Barcola.
Arsenal are also rumoured to hold an interest in the Frenchman and could swoop in if they are willing to spend big money.
Osimhen to replace Martinelli?
08:15 , Mike JonesA further addition to Arsenal’s talks with Galatasaray concerns the future of Victor Osimhen.
The Telegraph report that the two clubs have been discussing a move for the striker though it is unclear if Arsenal are driving the negotiations or if Osminhen has been offered to them.
Osimhen being included in a deal for Martinelli (and a lower fee) does seem like a proposal Galatasaray may favour and Arsenal are in the market for a new attacker.
Arsenal winger Gabriel Martinelli heading to Galatasaray?
08:14 , Mike JonesTurkish clubs have been active in the transfer window and Arsenal winger Gabriel Martinelli is the subject of a £38.5m bid from Galatasaray.
That’s according to journalist Florian Plettenberg, who reports that the 25-year-old Brazil winger is top of Galatasaray’s list of targets.
Arsenal have signed a winger in Christos Tzolis this summer and have been linked with Julian Alvarez and Bradley Barcola.
Chelsea set Enzo Fernandez deadline and asking price
08:08 , Mike JonesChelsea are demanding £120m from Manchester City for Enzo Fernandez and the Blues have set their Premier League rivals until 5pm today to submit their bid.
Man City boss Enzo Maresca is an admirer of Fernandez, but relations between the clubs are frosty given City had to pay Chelsea £17m in compensation after Maresca stepped down last season.
Chelsea subsequently said they felt “let down” by the Italian, who was negotiating a move to City whilst in charge at Stamford Bridge.
City had hoped to get a reduced price on Fernandez’s valuation though it seems likely that Chelsea will dig their heels in on both the fee and the deadline.
