Effective infrastructure planning and reliable public transportation services are undoubtedly one of the key foundations of city-living. However, that seems to be far from the case for many Malaysian commuters who have had to endure service interruptions, delays, and breakdowns.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke conducts surprise spot-checks at LRT stations
In light of this, newly-appointed Transport Minister Anthony Loke is already planning to take LRT management to task over these concerns, and was recently spotted conducting spot-checks on-board packed trains to ascertain the issues that passengers were met with on their journey. Seen keeping incognito with a black mask and cap obscuring his identity, Anthony appeared to blend-in relatively well with his surroundings as he observed the ongoings at the LRT stations.
Speaking of the experience on his official Facebook account, he said that he had spent a total of two hours during the rush hour peak from 5.00pm to 7.00pm yesterday (December 5th, 2022) to assess the situation along the Kelana Jaya LRT line on a first-hand basis.
“The conditions in the train were very cramped and certainly uncomfortable for the passengers,
I didn’t notify the media or Prasarana management about my visit, as I wanted to experience for myself what regular Malaysians have to endure everyday.” he said.
Aside from trains, he also made a point to check on the LRT stations themselves, including the elevators and escalators. From his brief experience, Anthony said that he empathised with the challenges faced by commuters who frequent the use of the LRT and will be calling a meeting with Prasarana to discuss on potential solutions and avenues of improvement.
Most recently, Malaysian commuters on the popular Kelana Jaya LRT line were met with an unprecedented 6-day long closure of a whopping 16 stations last month, after repair works were conducted on the Automatic Train Control (ATC) system when it had failed.
