THE Transport Ministry has instructed the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) to open an investigation into Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) over repeated disruptions to the KLIA Aerotrain service at Terminal 1.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said that while the ministry initially allowed MAHB time to adapt during the early adjustment phase, continued service interruptions necessitate firm action.
"At the early stage of aerotrain operations, the ministry acknowledged that MAHB needed time to adapt as the service was in its adjustment phase. However, as the aerotrain has now been operating for several months, the ministry, through APAD, will take firm action against MAHB for every service disruption that occurs," he said in a statement today.
Loke emphasised that under the conditions of its operating licence, MAHB is legally obligated to provide a satisfactory level of service. Any breach, under the Land Public Transport Act 2010, could attract a compound of up to RM250,000 per offence.
The Aerotrain, which links the main terminal and satellite building at KLIA Terminal 1, has faced multiple interruptions since resuming operations on 1 July following an extended suspension for upgrades.
Early this morning, passengers were reportedly forced to exit the carriages and walk along the tracks in darkness while carrying their luggage.
Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Hasbi Habibollah revealed in Parliament that the service experienced 19 incidents between 2 July and 30 September, arising from technical faults and human factors, such as passengers attempting to open train doors.
