Travel chaos as more than 400 flights cancelled at UK airports

  • More than 400 flights to and from UK airports were cancelled and hundreds delayed on Tuesday following a technical issue in the flight processing system operated by air traffic control provider Nats.
  • Major hubs including Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, and Birmingham were amongst the worst affected, with approximately four per cent of total UK flight operations disrupted alongside knock-on delays across Europe.
  • Nats confirmed engineers implemented a fix to resolve the glitch, but warned that full recovery across UK airspace will take time due to the significant backlog of flights.
  • Airlines such as EasyJet advised passengers to check their flight status and offered affected travellers options including free transfers, refunds, meals, and hotel accommodation.
  • Transport secretary Heidi Alexander apologised to travellers for the frustration caused, as many passengers faced severe delays, missed connections, and overnight stays at airports.
