- Relatives of tourists who died from methanol poisoning have launched the "Know the Signs" campaign to warn holidaymakers this summer.
- The campaign highlights that 29 destinations, including popular spots like Indonesia and Vietnam, carry UK Government travel warnings for methanol poisoning.
- Travellers are advised to be cautious with spirit-based drinks, especially those served “on the rocks”, in shots, cocktails, or in buckets and jugs.
- Symptoms such as nausea, vision problems, and breathlessness can appear 12 to 48 hours after consumption and should not be dismissed as a hangover, requiring urgent medical attention.
- To reduce risk, holidaymakers should opt for branded, sealed alcoholic drinks from licensed venues and avoid unlabelled, unusually cheap, or homemade alcohol.
