  • A seven-year-old girl died and a six-year-old girl was left critically injured after a tree fell in Chalkwell Park, Southend-on-Sea, on Saturday afternoon.
  • Three other children also sustained injuries in the incident, which occurred shortly before 3pm.
  • Dozens of eyewitnesses were present, with approximately 40-50 people attempting to lift the fallen tree to rescue the trapped children.
  • Essex Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collapse of the tree, which was reportedly held up by metal poles.
  • The park remains partially cordoned off for the investigation, and flowers are being laid by members of the public.
