In Terengganu, PAS has stepped up enforcement of the state's ban on unisex hair salons, and companies who break the gender-segregation licencing regulation will be subject to fines between RM500 and RM1,000.
The state executive councillor Datuk Dr. Alias Razak was quoted by Sin Chew Daily as saying, "The hair salon or barbershop, whether it is managed by Muslims or non-Muslims, is not authorised to give haircut services for both men and women at the same time."
He continued, saying: "There is no exemption for hair salons or barbershops run by non-Muslims. If we allow non-Muslim female hairdressers to provide haircuts for male customers, Muslim men may visit the shop.".
Apparently, This was not a brand-new regulation; rather, it was a continuing licencing rule that fell under the purview of the local government.
