Tributes flow for Oscar-nominated filmmaker after death at 56

  • Marjane Satrapi, the acclaimed Iranian-French cartoonist and filmmaker best known for her work Persepolis, has died at the age of 56.
  • French media reported that Satrapi “died of sadness” just over a year after the passing of her husband, Swedish film producer Mattias Ripa.
  • Her autobiographical comic book and film Persepolis chronicled her childhood in Iran during the Islamic Revolution, earning significant international awards and an Oscar nomination.
  • Satrapi was a vocal advocate for human rights, particularly for Iranian women, co-ordinating the book Femme, vie, liberté (Woman, Life, Freedom) and declining France's Legion of Honour over perceived insufficient support for Iranian democracy.
  • French President Emmanuel Macron is among those paying tribute, describing Satrapi as “a remarkable artist who transformed an Iranian childhood into a universal fable”.
