Tributes paid to Nobu chef killed in crash outside restaurant

  • Ryo Uchimiya, a 51-year-old sushi chef at Nobu Malibu, has died after a car crashed into his parked vehicle while he was taking a nap before work.
  • Mr Uchimiya had arrived early for his shift Saturday morning, LASD Sergeant John Addington told The Los Angeles Times, and was parked on a stretch of the Pacific Coast Highway near the high-end restaurant when the collision happened.
  • Surveillance footage obtained by KTLA 5 shows a Range Rover SUV slam into the back of a stationary car at around 6am, with the force of the impact pushing the struck car into another parked vehicle.
  • Addington informed The Times that the driver is 16 years old and it appears he was speeding at the time of the crash.
  • Tributes including origami cranes and flowers have been left at a memorial near the crash site for the father-of-two.
