Trio fined RM4,800 for gambling offences

Kota Kinabalu: Three individuals were fined a total of RM4,800 by the Magistrates’ Courts, here, for offences under the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.

Mohd Syahrizan Noordin, 28, and Azwendy Necles, 26, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Marilyn Kelvin to separate charges of buying unlicensed public lottery tickets.

Syahrizan was fined RM2,000 or two months’ jail for buying four unlicensed public lottery tickets at Uptown Nambazan, Penampang, on June 18 at 5pm.

The court heard that police conducting Ops Dadu at the premises arrested Syahrizan after finding him involved in the purchase of unlicensed public lottery tickets. Four slips believed to be betting records were seized and later confirmed by a gambling expert.

Azwendy was fined RM1,600 or jailed one month for buying four unlicensed public lottery tickets at a premises in Donggongon, Penampang, on May 25 at 4pm.

The court was told that police conducting Ops Dadu detained Azwendy after finding four slips of paper in her possession, which were later confirmed as unlicensed Wah Hui betting tickets.

Both Syahrizan and Azwendy were charged under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, which carries a fine of up to RM5,000, or imprisonment of up to six months, or both, on conviction.

Meanwhile, Alfazir, 19, was fined RM1,200 or jailed one month by Magistrate Wan Farrah Farriza Wan Ghazali for gambling in a public place.

He committed the offence at about 1pm on July 27 at the pavement at Sinsuran 1, Kompleks Sinsuran here.

The court heard that police conducting an operation at the location detained Alfazir for engaging in unlicensed lottery number gambling involving Hwa Hui and seized items linked to the activity.

Alfazir was charged under Section 7(2) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, which also carries a fine of up to RM5,000, or imprisonment of up to six months, or both upon conviction.
