If you are reading this, you probably already know that Netflix’s Troll 2 has a tragic ending. Set three years after the events of the first movie, the sequel to the 2022 film Troll is one of the most ambitious mainstream Norwegian projects we’ve seen recently.

Inspired by Norwegian folklore and mythology, Troll 2 introduces a new threat to the Troll universe when an all-new giant, known as Megatroll, awakens and goes on a rampage. Director Roar Uthaug returns to helm the sequel, which features the original cast reprising their roles: Ine Marie Wilmann returns as Nora Tidemann, Mads Pettersen plays Kristoffer Holm, now promoted to army major, and Kim Falck portrays political advisor Andreas Isaksen.

These heroes must stop the monster before their country falls prey to its destruction, and one of the ways this becomes possible is by befriending another troll named Beautiful, who confronts the threat on their behalf. Additionally, the movie explores two major themes: Christianity versus Paganism and the colonisation of indigenous people.

The film attempts to evoke the spirit of Godzilla vs. Kong (2021), but falls short in nearly every aspect, particularly in its handling of the Kaiju elements that make films like Godzilla vs. Kong so enjoyable.

So, what happens at the end of this Norwegian movie? Let’s find out in this ending explained piece on Netflix’s Troll 2.

Spoilers ahead!

Beautiful and Megatroll engage in two battles. The first ends with Beautiful drowning beneath sheets of ice, leading everyone to believe he is dead. The second takes place during the climax of the film, where Megatroll once again overpowers Beautiful, attempting to drown him a second time.

Seeing him in peril, Nora fights back against Megatroll, but her efforts are in vain as Beautiful loses consciousness. Meanwhile, Kris and Andreas attempt to drop their last remaining holy water bomb into Megatroll’s mouth, hoping it will burn him from within.

Do Andreas and Kris succeed in their mission?

Yes, but their success comes at a cost.

As both men are aboard the helicopter, with Kris piloting to get closer to Megatroll’s mouth, the holy water bomb begins to slide off. Andreas manages to catch it just in time, but in the process, the detonator falls and is lost, meaning the bomb now must be detonated manually using a grenade.

Andreas decides to jump into the monster’s mouth with the bomb and grenade so that they can be detonated inside its body. He calls his partner and says goodbye to their unborn child before leaping from the chopper straight into Megatroll’s mouth.

Does Andreas die?

Yes, Andreas sacrifices himself for the greater good, attempting to save the rest of humanity from Megatroll. The monster collapses, burning, and is finished off by Beautiful, who, in the meantime, has risen with renewed strength.

What happens in the aftermath?

After Megatroll is defeated, thanks to Andreas’ sacrifice, Nora, Kris, and Marion (played by Sara Khorami) live in peace, along with Andreas’ partner, Siggy, and her baby, Uhura. Meanwhile, Beautiful coexists with them, nestled peacefully in the mountains surrounding Nora’s home.

But wait, there’s more.

Troll 2 ending explained: What does the mid-credits scene mean?

Jon Ketil Johnsen as Professor Møller (C-R) in one of the earlier scenes of Netflix’s Troll 2.

The film features a mid-credits scene with Professor Møller holding a tiny troll captive in a glass case. It turns out that earlier in the film, when Megatroll was escaping from Vemork, a piece of it, a small stone, had broken off and was pocketed by Møller. In the lab, the researchers and Møller conducted tests on it and managed to turn it into a living troll, albeit a tiny one.

At the end of the movie, Møller is seen speaking to someone on the phone. He says, “I have great news, General. The specimen I was able to save has developed.” The tiny troll in the glass box is then revealed to the audience as he continues, “Well, it doesn’t look like much now, but just give it some time.”

Is this a hint for Troll 3? We’ll let you figure that one out.
