Tropical Depression Kiyapo to dump rain in Northern Luzon

MANILA, Philippines — Tropical Depression Kiyapo is expected to dump rain in Northern Luzon as it approaches the mainland, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said Thursday.

In its 5 a.m. bulletin, Pagasa said “Kiyapo” was last seen 950 km east of Central Luzon and was moving west northwest at 20 kilometers per hour.

It had maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 55 kilometers per hour.

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 was hoisted in the provinces of Batanes, Cagayan including Babuyan Islands, Isabela, Apayao, Abra, Kalinga, the eastern and central portions of Mountain Province (Paracelis, Natonin, Barlig, Sadanga, Bontoc, Besao, Sagada), the eastern and central portions of Ifugao (Mayoyao, Aguinaldo, Alfonso Lista, Banaue, Hingyon, Lagawe), Ilocos Norte, the northern portion of Ilocos Sur (Cabugao, Sinait, San Juan, Magsingal, Santo Domingo, Bantay, San Ildefonso, San Vicente), and the northern portion of Aurora (Dilasag, Casiguran)

At 2 p.m. today, “Kiyapo” is expected to be 705 kilometers east of Echague, Isabela, and by Friday, it would be 395 kilometers east of Tuguegarao Cagayan.

It is expected to leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Saturday.

Meanwhile, parts of Visayas and Mindanao should expect heavy rainfall due to the southwest monsoon, with localized thunderstorms and landslides possible in highly susceptible areas.

The rest of the country, including Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon, will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rain showers and thunderstorms.
