TAWAU: The Tropical Rainforest Run 2024 concluded at Tawau Hills Park on Nov 24, drawing 235 participants from eight nations, including Malaysia, Kenya, Brunei, Indonesia, and China.

The event showcased Sabah’s pristine natural beauty while emphasising eco-tourism and conservation.

Marking a new chapter in its history, the event debuted a 28km Trail Run, replacing the previous 21km distance.

In the men’s 28km Open category, Malaysia’s Sheron Sariman emerged victorious, completing the course in an impressive 03:23:45.

Kenya’s Naomi Wambui Muriuki clinched first place in the women’s Open category with a time of 05:19:04.

The veterans’ categories were dominated by Malaysian runners, with Ruston Masri winning the men’s event in 03:52:26 and Epang Sarawi securing the women’s title in 05:50:35.

Beyond the thrill of competition, the event underscored Sabah’s commitment to conservation.

Participants were encouraged to “leave no trace,” ensuring the park’s ecological integrity remained intact. Additionally, 10 per cent of the registration fees were donated to Sabah Parks’ conservation initiatives.

Deputy Permanent Secretary Mary Malangking, representing Tourism, Culture, and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew, hailed the event as a model for eco-tourism.

“The Tropical Rainforest Run highlights the park’s exceptional biodiversity, fostering a global appreciation for Sabah’s natural heritage while reminding us of the importance of preserving it for generations to come,” she said.

Mary also praised participants for their perseverance, noting that the event elevated Tawau Hills Park as a premier eco-tourism destination. “This run is more than just a race—it is a platform to inspire awareness, support conservation, and promote eco-tourism, bringing lasting benefits to both the community and the environment.”

Tawau Hills Park, renowned for its towering Yellow Meranti trees, soothing hot springs, and diverse wildlife, offered runners and visitors an immersive encounter with nature, solidifying its status as one of Sabah’s most treasured landscapes.
