Kota Kinabalu: The true strength of the Muslim community, or “Ummah”, lies not in numbers or wealth, but in knowledge, values and character, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Mohd Nor.

“The culture of knowledge is a legacy that empowers awareness, fosters intellectualism, and strengthens the identity of Muslims,” he said in a speech delivered by State Science, Innovation and Technology Minister Datuk Ariffin Arif at the Fikrah Madani Seminar held at Dewan Saadah Tuesday.

Hajiji stressed the importance of reviving the spirit of “tadabbur” (reflection) on the Quran and nurturing a love for knowledge as key elements in facing modern-day challenges.

“In a world filled with uncertainties, it is vital for the next generation to equip themselves with knowledge, principles, and strong values,” he said.

He urged the Muslim community, especially the youth, to draw inspiration from the late Prof. Dato’ Dr Siddiq Fadzil, a prominent Islamic educator and thinker known for his progressive Islamic outlook.

Hajiji highlighted Dr Siddiq’s Manhaj Malizi approach — an inclusive, moderate, and progressive interpretation of Islam that aligns with Malaysia’s multicultural society, particularly in Sabah.

“Dr Siddiq’s teachings reject extremism and division. His legacy promotes a message of Islam based on kindness and peace, crucial for building a harmonious and knowledgeable society,” he said.

Hajiji also acknowledged the late Dr Siddiq’s role as a respected writer, orator, and leader of the Malaysian Islamic Youth Movement (Abim) and Wadah Pencerdasan Umat.

The seminar featured forum sessions and was jointly organised by Wadah Pencerdasan Umat Malaysia (Sabah), the Sabah Islamic Religious Council (Muis), Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Sabah, and Abim Sabah.

Among the prominent speakers were Yang Dipertua Usia Datuk Haji Sapawi Haji Ahmad, Concern Chairman Haji Sainuri Yahmin, Yadim Board Member Datuk Dr Amin Senin, and Sabah Youth Council Deputy President Muhd Nur Hilmie Milus, among others.
