With just a week left in the 2024 US presidential election cycle, Donald Trump and Kamala Harris are making their final pitches to voters across the country, particularly the battleground states.
On Monday, Trump was in Atlanta, Georgia, where he denied being a Nazi while continuing to spew hateful anti-immigrant rhetoric and took a swipe at former first lady Michelle Obama, saying she had been “nasty” to him in recent criticisms and ominously warning she had made “a big mistake” by doing so.
Meanwhile, Barack Obama and Bruce Springsteen stumped for Harris in Philadelphia, with the 44th president taking aim at his Republican successor’s Madison Square Garden rally in New York and comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s racist joke about Puerto Rico.
In a possible setback for the Democrat, it has emerged that she was caught on a hot mic over the weekend discussing the race with Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and admitting: “We need to move ground among men.”
Trump will host another press conference at Mar-a-Lago on Tuesday before the Vice President delivers a “closing argument” at the Ellipse in Washington DC, the site of his notorious “fight like hell” speech on January 6 2021.

“One guy called Puerto Rico an ’island of garbage.’ These are fellow citizens he’s talking about... If somebody doesn’t respect you, you should not vote for them.”

Trump says ‘nasty’ Michelle Obama made a ‘big mistake’ by attacking him as rally crowd chants ‘Lock her up!’ about Harris
09:00
Joe Sommerlad
Good morning!
Donald Trump has ominously warned Michelle Obama that she made a “big mistake” by being “nasty” to him at a rally in Atlanta, Georgia, on Monday evening.
Speaking at the Georgia Institute of Technology last night, the former president adopted a gleeful and ironical tone as he warned the former first lady that she had “opened up a little bit of a box”.
“You now who was nasty to me? Michelle Obama,” said Trump, prompting a loud chorus of boos, jeers and shouts from his audience. “She was really – ooooooh.
“I always tried to be so nice and respectful,” he went on, despite having spent years accusing her husband of secretly being born in Kenya and therefore ineligible to be a US president.
“Oooooh! She opened up a little bit of a box. She opened up a little bit of something,” said Trump.
“She was nasty, whooo. Shouldn;t be that way. That was a big mistake she made. With your support on November 5 we will achieve success that no one can imagine.”
Trump’s comments came in response to a speech by Michelle Obama in Michigan on Saturday, where she accused him of “gross incompetence”, “erratic behavior” and “obvious mental decline”.
From there, a chant of “Lock her up!” erupted, just like in 2016, although this time the target was Kamala Harris, not Hillary Clinton.

More than 200,000 Washington Post subscribers have canceled their subscriptions to the legacy newspaper after CEO Jeff Bezos refused to endorse a candidate days before Election Day.
By midday on Monday the number had climbed to more than 200k – representing approximately 8 percent of the paper’s paid circulation, according to NPR.
In addition to the disgruntled former subscribers, a wave of columnists have resigned in the wake of the decision.

Sarah Palin: 'You're obnoxious'. Mehdi Hasan: 'You're a racist'
02:59
Io Dodds
Anglo-American commentator Mehdi Hasan got into a fierce exchange with Republican former governor of Alaska Sarah Palin on Piers Morgan's talk show tonight.
During a discussion about energy production and energy independence under Joe Biden vs Donald Trump, Palin claimed that "on day one" Biden had stopped building new oil pipelines and banned drilling on federal land.
That seemed to be a reference to Biden's cancellation of the Keystone XL pipeline project on the first day of his presidency, and to his suspension of new oil and gas leases on federal land about a week later (though this was later overturned by the courts).
Hasan muttered "that's not true", prompting Palin to lambast him as a liar.
There then followed several minutes of people talking over each other at high volume, culminating in Palin declaring "you're an obnoxious ass!"
Hasan responded by calling Palin a "racist", citing her history of controversial comments about Barack Obama – such as reportedly claiming that he was "not one of us" at a 2008 rally or lauding Donald Trump's conspiracy theories about Obama's birth certificate.

Ballot box arsons in Oregon and Washington ‘could be linked’
02:25
Io Dodds
Two incidents of ballot boxes being set on fire early Monday morning in Portland, Oregon, and nearby Vancouver, Washington, appear to be linked, my colleague Josh Marcus reports.
An identical black Volvo sedan was spotted at both crime scenes, and an “incendiary device” used in Portland was “similar in nature” to what happened in Vancouver, police said.
They added that the circumstances matched an October 8 attempt to set fire to another ballot box in Vancouver.
“We don’t know the motive behind these acts,” Portland Police Bureau Assistant Chief Amanda McMillan said in a statement on Monday.
“We do know acts like this are targeted and they’re intentional and we’re concerned about that intentional act trying to impact the election process. We’re dedicated to stopping this kind of behavior.”

Trump to speak in heavily Puerto Rican town

With perfect timing, Donald Trump will be holding a rally tomorrow in Allentown, Pennsylvania, which has a large Hispanic community largely comprising Puerto Ricans.
That's after a comedian at Trump's big rally in Madison Square Garden on Sunday night called Puerto Rico a “floating island of garbage".

Jeff Bezos defends himself in Washington Post op-ed
01:31
Io Dodds
Washington Post owner and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has insisted that there was "no quid pro quo of any kind" behind his reported order for the newspaper to break with decades of tradition and endorse no candidate this election.
In an op-ed for – who'd have guessed it – The Washington Post, Bezos argues that endorsements undermine journalists' neutrality and that stopping them helps to mitigate the ongoing and long-term decline of trust in American media.
He said that "neither campaign nor candidate was consulted or informed at any level or in any way about this decision", and that he has never once pressured any Post journalists to the benefit of his other business interests.
"By itself, declining to endorse presidential candidates is not enough to move us very far up the trust scale, but it’s a meaningful step in the right direction," Bezos said.
"I wish we had made the change earlier than we did, in a moment further from the election and the emotions around it. That was inadequate planning, and not some intentional strategy."
The Washington Post originally did not make official endorsements, but began doing so in 1976, and has not previouly failed to endorse a candidate since 1988.

'I'm rich as hell, I don't give a damn'
00:56
Io Dodds
Here’s some lines from Trump’s rally in Atlanta, courtesy of my colleague Phil Thomas:
- Trump claimed that he “[doesn’t] even know what it’s all about” as he addressed the Atlanta criminal charges against him for allegedly trying to bully state officials into “finding” him an extra 11,870 votes.
- He also fantasized about Al Capone having people whacked after taking them out for dinner?
- “I’m rich as hell, I don’t give a damn”
- One of his first topics was the alleged threat of transgender rights: “We don’t want transgender operations all over the place... we don’t want men playing in women’s sports... nobody’s ever come up to me and said, ‘sir, it’s really important to me – would you do me a favour – would you let men play in women’s sports?”
Harris shouts out Gen Z: ‘You are impatient for change’
00:50
Io Dodds
Meanwhile, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Kamala Harris is giving a shout out to Generation Z, according to my colleague Josh Marcus.
“I love your generation. I really do. You are rightly impatient for change," she says. "I love that about you."
"You have only known the climate crisis are leading the charge to protect our planet and our future. You young leaders who grew up with active shooter drills and are fighting then to keep our schools safe. You who know fewer rights than your mothers and grandmothers are standing up for reproductive freedom.
"I know for you then, these issues are not theoretical.”
She also argued that the overturning of Roe v Wade by Trump-appointed judges was unpopular with men as well as women, saying: “The men of America are seeing their daughters and wives and sisters and mothers put at risk because their rights have been taken from them. The men of America don’t want this.”
Obama mocks Trump Bibles made in China
00:27
Io Dodds
Barack Obama has mocked Donald Trump for selling Bibles made in China as he speaks at the Harris rally in Philadelphia.
“You’re Mr Tough Guy on China, except when you can make a few bucks," the former president said, according to my colleague Josh Marcus.
"You cannot make this stuff up. If it was on Saturday Night Live, everybody would just say that’s exaggerated. It’s not, he’s doing it. The reason he’s doing it is because that’s what he cares about: his ego, his money, his status."
He also sharply criticised the racist rhetoric on display at Trump's Madison Square Garden rally last night, saying: “Here’s a good rule. If somebody does not respect you, if somebody does not see you as fellow citizens with equal claims to opportunity, to the pursuit of happiness, to the American dream – you should not vote for them.
"We have to reject the kind of politics of division and hatred that we saw represented. America is ready to turn the page.”

Meanwhile, in the crucial swing state of Pennsylvania, Bruce Springsteen is on stage at a Kamala Harris rally, playing his guitar.
"I'm Bruce Springsteen and I'm here today to support Kamala Harris and Tim Walz," said the Born in the USA singer in his trademark growl. "And to oppose Donald Trump and JD Vance!"
He went on: "Here's why. I want a president who reveres the constitution. Who does not threaten, but wants to protect and guide, our great democracy. Who believes in the rule of law and the peaceful transfer of power. Who will fight for women's rights."
Harris, he added, "is running to be the 47th president of the United States. Donald Trump is running to be an American tyrant."

Giuliani may have to give up $3.5m condo
Monday 28 October 2024 22:40
Josh Marcus
A pair of election workers Rudy Giuliani defamed are preparing to obtain a long list of valuables, including a 1980 Mercedes Benz once owned by Lauren Bacall, and his Manhattan penthouse, after a federal judge ordered the disbarred former mayor to turn over his property last week.
Giuliani’s attorneys returned to court on Monday as he faces an imminent deadline for Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss to seize assets that they plan to sell to make up for the nearly $150 million he owes for defaming them in the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election, when he falsely accused them of manipulating ballots and election results in Georgia.
Giuliani did not appear at Monday’s hearing in Manhattan. On Sunday night, he spoke to nearly 20,000 people in Madison Square Garden to boost Donald Trump, his former client, whose spurious efforts to reverse his 2020 loss has landed Giuliani in courtroom battles of his own across the country.
The former mayor plans to maintain his residence in Palm Beach, Florida, but he is barred by the court from doing anything to diminish its value as District Judge Lewis Liman determines whether his creditors can seize it.

Georgia congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene defended comedian Tony Hinchcliffe on Monday after he was widely criticized for making racist jokes at a Trump rally over the weekend at Madison Square Garden.
During his set, Hinchcliffe used racist and stereotypical tropes to talk about Black people, Jews, Palestinians, and Latinos, and compared Puerto Rico to a “floating island of garbage.”In a message on X on Monday, Greene praised Hinchliffe, arguing the comic brought attention to waste management issues on the island, and attached what appeared to be a vague Google AI summary of the search “waste management problem Puerto Rico” as evidence.
“Also, a 2024 federal audit report showed that less than 10% of more than $23 billion in available federal funds have been spent in Puerto Rico under the Biden Harris administration,” Greene wrote of the comedian’s set, which did not contain any discussion of Puerto Rico beyond the brief insult.

Donald Trump’s campaign staffers are afraid of being spied on with surveillance devices inside their headquarters, a since-fired employee claimed.
