Trump could challenge British sovereignty over Falkland Islands

  • President Donald Trump has confirmed he is reviewing the United States' position on British sovereignty over the Falkland Islands.
  • The move follows reports that the US could challenge British rule of the overseas territory to pressure the UK into boosting defence spending.
  • The islands are administered by the UK but are claimed by Argentina, whose president is an ally of Mr Trump.
  • Chancellor John Healey said that the Falkland Islands are British and will remain so for as long as the islanders wish.
  • Mr Healey also said that he is fully committed to delivering a UK defence spending target of 3 per cent of GDP at the spring review.
