Trump keeps Presidents Cup speech uncharacteristically short

  • President Donald Trump is attending the final round of the Presidents Cup on Sunday and gave brief remarks at the first tee.
  • “The fake news media will say I got a very bad reception. We got a good reception!” Trump said. “[PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp] said, ‘Will you make a short speech?’ I said, ‘No, I don't have the courage to make a speech, these people want to see golf, they don’t want to hear speeches.”
  • He continued, “I will only say this: Our country is doing great, better than ever before” and told the players to “play their hearts out.”
  • Trump is serving as honorary chairman of the Presidents Cup for a second time and Sunday’s event marks his fourth visit to a golf tournament this year.
  • Trump showed up at the end of the 2017 Presidents Cup at Liberty National during his first term and posed with U.S. players during the trophy presentation.
