Donald Trump on Monday said that he was excited about his upcoming trip to Beijing later this week, which will mark the first visit to China by a US president since 2017.

"I am very much looking forward to my trip to China, an amazing Country, with a Leader, President Xi, respected by all. Great things will happen for both Countries!" Trump said on his Truth Social platform.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry earlier on Monday confirmed that Trump would visit China from Wednesday to Friday at the invitation of President Xi Jinping.

Trump himself had previously announced the visit. China only confirmed the state visit shortly before its start, as is customary in such cases.

Trump had originally planned to travel to China at the end of March, but Washington asked Beijing to postpone the visit by a few weeks, citing its conflict with Tehran.

Trump and Xi last met in South Korea in October on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit. The two largest economies are locked in a major trade conflict.
