Trump makes rare Epstein comment as Obama laughs off Cheesecake Factory drama at dueling midterm rallies: Live updates

Donald Trump and Barack Obama held dueling rallies across the country Wednesday night as they drum up support for their parties ahead of Tuesday’s midterms.

Trump was immediately interrupted by a heckler while stumping Republican Senator Jon Husted in Ohio

The president started off gushing over Husted’s body — which has become a common occurrence at his rallies — and then a protester in the crowd yelled about Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender who ran in the same social circles as Trump decades ago.

“I threw Epstein out of a club like 20 years ago because I thought he was a wackjob,” Trump said in response.

Obama, stumping for Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff in Georgia, laughed off the drama surrounding his comparison of Trump’s White House renovations to the Cheesecake Factory.

“He’s got the White House looking like Saddam Hussein opened a Cheesecake Factory,” the former president opined during a recent Ohio rally.

That angered the MAGA base, which blasted Obama for “elitist” comments that were out of touch with everyday Americans.

"This was all crazy,” he said Wednesday. “They mobilized a whole government response to that joke — not inflation — but to that joke.”

Jan 6 defender Mike Johnson is annoyed when asked if Republicans will have peaceful transition of power

03:24 , Brendan Rascius

House Speaker Mike Johnson appeared irked when asked whether he would commit to a peaceful transfer of power, dismissing concerns that Republicans might contest Democratic midterm election victories as “absurd.”

Johnson, who supported claims that the 2020 election was fraudulent and defended January 6 rioters, made the comments on Tuesday during a campaign stop in Orangeburg, New York.

“I want to ask you: do you commit to having a peaceful transfer of power come January, regardless of what the results are?” a reporter asked Johnson.

“It’s a little silly you have to ask the question,” the Louisiana Republican responded. “Of course we’ll have a peaceful transfer of power, but it will not be transferring, because we are going to keep the majority, and I’m going to be the Speaker of the House, and I will keep steady hands at the wheel.”

FULL STORY: Trump inexplicably decides to riff about Jeffrey Epstein in Ohio while stumping for midterms

02:07 , Rachel Dobkin

President Donald Trump went on an eyebrow-raising riff about Jeffrey Epstein while stumping for Republicans in Ohio ahead of Tuesday midterm elections.

Trump remained tight-lipped about the late convicted sex offender and wealthy financier as his administration faced backlash last year over its handling of government files relating to its federal sex trafficking case against Epstein.

In a rare remark about Epstein, who ran in the same social circles as Trump decades ago, the president said Wednesday night that he threw him the “hell out of Mar-a-Lago.”

'These are not serious people': Obama

01:33 , Rachel Dobkin

Barack Obama mocked Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth for trying to give the military a tough-guy overhaul while also reminding the crowd that he had seriously suggested a live execution of Nidal M. Hasan.

President Donald Trump ultimately put the kibosh on that.

"These are not serious people,” the former president said in Georgia.

Obama loves Cheesecake Factory

00:51 , Ryan Parker

Barack Obama made sure to mention the Cheesecake Factory drama...saying he loved the place — and thought it was funny the White House had NO issues with his point about rising prices and instead whined about his comparison.

At a previous rally in Ohio, Obama ripped President Donald Trump’s White House renovations, saying, “He’s got the White House looking like Saddam Hussein opened a Cheesecake Factory.”

The MAGA base blasted the former president for “elitist” comments, even though Trump later joked that many Americans can’t afford to eat at his Mar-a-Lago club.

"This was all crazy. They mobilized a whole government response to that joke — not inflation — but to that joke,” the former president said in Georgia Wednesday night.

Obama took swipes at Trump during Georgia rally: 'Series of bad decisions'

00:29 , Rachel Dobkin

Barack Obama took swipes at Donald Trump and his empty campaign promises — without using the president's name — while asking a Georgia crowd to look at the facts.

Pointing out that Trump's administration made a "series of bad decisions" that were punctuated by the Iran War, the former president said the nation's suffering and hard times are a direct result of Trump.

"You are not getting any relief anytime soon,” Obama said.

Trump was gushing over Senator Jon Husted's body again — then a heckler yelled at him about Jeffrey Epstein

The president started off Wednesday night’s rally in Ohio gushing over Republican Senator Jon Husted’s body.

Then, a protester in the crowd yelled about Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender who ran in the same social circles as Trump decades ago.

“I threw Epstein out of a club like 20 years ago because I thought he was a wackjob,” Trump said in response.

He called hecklers who have constantly interrupted his rally speeches “sick, weak people.”

How is Jon Husted polling ahead of Trumps's Ohio rally?

Republican Sen. Jon Husted and former Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown are neck-and-neck in a race for the U.S. Senate in Ohio.

Husted and Brown were tied at 47 percent in a new NetChoice/Echelon Insights poll. Another poll from Suffolk University had Brown ahead by 3 points, 47 to 44 percent. Brown was also leading Husted by 3 points in an InsiderAdvantage poll, 47 to 44 percent.

President Donald Trump has traveled to the Buckeye State for a third time to boost Husted’s chances.

MAGA lost it over ‘elitist’ Cheesecake Factory dig. But now they sit silent as Trump boasts about Mar-a-Lago food cost

Wednesday 28 October 2026 22:57 , Brendan Rascius

MAGA fumed over Barack Obama’s viral Cheesecake Factory dig, seizing on the remark to paint Democrats as snobbish and out of touch with hard working Americans. But President Donald Trump hasn’t exactly helped his allies make their case as he joked that his own supporters could barely afford a meal at his Mar-a-Lago resort.

“That's not a good place if you're price conscious,” the billionaire president quipped Tuesday at a Texas rally.

That came after Obama used the popular chain as he criticized Trump’s ballroom makeover. That led to furious MAGA outrage over the comment, which they branded “elitist” and out of touch with everyday Americans who consider Cheesecake Factory an upscale meal.

Trump’s team ratchets up ‘voter fraud’ arrests as president sows election doubts

Wednesday 28 October 2026 22:17 , Alex Woodward

With a week to go before midterm Election Day and as early voting was kicking off across the country, Donald Trump’s administration announced more than 50 arrests alleging “illegal voting, fraudulent voter registration, and related election crimes.”

Federal agencies are flooding social media with images and videos of agents in their official blue windbreakers handcuffing immigrants with blurred-out faces. The Department of Homeland Security promotes “ANOTHER VOTER FRAUD ARREST” almost daily with warnings that officers are “cracking down on election fraud and bringing those responsible to justice.”

The Department of Justice has charged at least 180 people with illegally voting or registering to vote as noncitizens since the start of Trump’s second term, according to a recent analysis by The Washington Post. More than half of those cases were brought within the last two months.

But none of the cases appear to show any evidence of a concerted effort among Democrats or other groups to “rig” or “steal” elections from Trump and his Republican allies, despite the president’s bogus, years-long narrative that his political enemies are conspiring against him.

FULL STORY: Trump demands Alaska ballot change after report on Dems recruiting Dan Sullivan to campaign

Wednesday 28 October 2026 21:45 , Brendan Rascius

President Donald Trump has demanded that Alaska change its ballot after The New York Times reported that Democrats spent months trying to recruit a man named Dan Sullivan to run against Dan S. Sullivan, the state’s Republican senator.

“It has just been determined that the Democrats in Alaska illegally searched for, and recruited, a man named Dan Sullivan to run against our distinguished Republican Senator, Dan Sullivan, in order to defraud, confuse, and obfuscate the Election, thereby taking votes away from the REAL Senator, Dan Sullivan,” Trump wrote on Truth Social Wednesday.

He added that Democratic candidate Mary Peltola “should suffer the Legal and Political consequences for what she has done, A FRAUD ON THE AMERICAN PUBLIC, and Dan Sullivan should be allowed to run without either Mary Peltola or FAKE Dan Sullivan on the Ballot.”

Peltola’s campaign has denied involvement with Dan J. Sullivan’s team, and Sullivan has said the decision to run was his alone.

Trump says Democratic candidate in Alaska 'shouldn't be allowed to run'

Wednesday 28 October 2026 21:06 , Rachel Dobkin

President Donald Trump has said that Democratic Senate candidate Mary Peltola in Alaska “shouldn't be allowed to run” over the double Dan Sullivan fiasco.

Trump directed the Justice Department to file a lawsuit to block the certification of the tight Senate race if Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan loses. The president has claimed that there is a Democratic plot to siphon votes away from the GOP incumbent because of another man named Daniel J. Sullivan Jr. on the ballot.

Trump claimed it was Peltola who was the mastermind behind Sullivan Jr.’s candidacy.

“In Alaska, I don’t think Mary Peltola, after perpetrating such a terrible scheme, should be allowed to run, because this is ELECTION FRAUD. The Democrats cheated!

“They found a man named Dan Sullivan, put him on the Ballot, then lied to the Court, and said they didn’t know anything about it. That’s perjury. She shouldn’t be allowed to run, and neither should the FAKE Dan Sullivan!” the president raged on Truth Social.

A New York Times investigation published Wednesday reportedly found that Peltola’s team worked with people trying to recruit Sullivan Jr. for a Senate run. The Democrat’s campaign has repeatedly denied it was involved in Sullivan Jr.’s candidacy.

Trump’s favorite pollster says Dems will win big in the midterms

Wednesday 28 October 2026 20:43 , Rachel Dobkin

Donald Trump’s favorite pollster, Harry Enten from CNN, has predicted that Democrats will win big in next Tuesday’s midterm elections and have a substantial majority in the House of Representatives.

Enten, averaging numbers from election forecasters, found that a year ago, there were 206 House seats that at least leaned Democrat for the next Congress.

“Look at it now, up like a rocket. We’re now talking 223 seats. This is north of the 218 that Democrats need to take back the U.S. House of Representatives,” Enten said on CNN News Central Wednesday.

While Trump would typically brush off unfavorable polling as fake, he has already admitted that Enten’s “got credibility.”

Mike Johnson claims 'the polls are wrong' as Dems take the lead

Wednesday 28 October 2026 20:22 , Rachel Dobkin

House Speaker Mike Johnson has claimed that “the polls are wrong” as Democrats lead Republicans in several surveys.

“I’m telling you, the polls are wrong. They are inaccurate. They’re underrepresenting Republicans, and many of the pollsters have admitted that,” Johnson told CNN’s Manu Raju. “Republicans aren’t responding [to the polls] anymore.”

Meanwhile, more likely voters said they would pick the Democratic candidate, 52 percent, over the Republican candidate, 41 percent, in their congressional district, according to a new New York Times/Siena University poll.

Democrats had another 11-point lead, over Republicans, 47 to 36 percent, in congressional races, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll.

Trump calls for Alaska Senate election to be canceled

ACLU and other civil rights groups sue to block Trump administration's efforts searching for noncitizen voters

Wednesday 28 October 2026 19:42 , Isabel Keane

The ACLU argued in a lawsuit filed Wednesday that the Trump administration’s search for rare instances of noncitizen voters actually targets naturalized U.S. citizens — but not people born in the country.

The lawsuit argues that violates the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

“The Unlawful Voter Initiative therefore subjects naturalized and derivative citizens to investigatory scrutiny related to voting qualifications that natural-born citizens do not face,” the lawsuit says.

The lawsuit, filed in Northern California, comes as Trump officials are trying to force California to disregard some 20,000 ballots from voters they suspect are noncitizens.

GOP Sen. Dan Sullivan of Alaska slams Democratic rival over alleged spoiler candidate

Wednesday 28 October 2026 19:13 , Isabel Keane

Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan of Alaska slammed his Democratic opponent, Mary Peltola, after The New York Times on Wednesday reported that officials associated with her campaign recruited a spoiler candidate, also named Dan Sullivan.

Democratic operatives aligned with Peltola reportedly persuaded another Dan Sullivan, who is a retired teacher, to throw his hat into the ring and run against the incumbent, according to the Times report.

“Mary Peltola and her campaign have spent months gaslighting Alaskans, denying a scheme they were running all along,” a Sullivan campaign spokesman said. “We always knew this was a concerted effort to deceive Alaskans, and Mary Peltola was hoping it would stay covered up until after the election.”

Peltola’s campaign has denied any involvement.

Federal Reserve leaves interest rate unchanged ahead of the midterms

Wednesday 28 October 2026 18:27 , Alex Lang

The Federal Reserve has kept its interest rate unchanged, making the decision days before the midterm elections.

The rate will remain around 3.9 percent as inflation continues to hammer everyday Americans. President Donald Trump has long pushed the board to lower interest rates and has demanded countless times that they make the move.

Wednesday's decision came with little information about The fed’s next move, according to the Associated Press.

“Inflation remains elevated,” the Fed said in a statement. Holding off on an increase will allow “the accumulation of more information” that will help determine what policy the Fed should pursue “to ensure a timely return of inflation” to the central bank’s 2% inflation target, the statement said.

Silicon Valley is bracing itself for a Democrat investigation into Big Tech’s relationship with President Donald Trump, if the party does well in the midterm elections as expected, a report says.

Some of the industry’s biggest players have ingratiated themselves with the Republican and his administration – paying court at Mar-a-Lago and making generous donations to his pet building projects. But now they could face consequences for going all-in on Trump and face accusations of allowing artificial intelligence to advance unchecked.

California Democratic strategist Cooper Teboe told The Hill that the software giants have “done nothing to prevent themselves from being the villain of the 2028 storyline” and therefore have no one to blame but themselves if the political landscape suddenly shifts next month.

Trump has robbed victims of $119M in court-ordered restitution with his pardons of allies

Wednesday 28 October 2026 14:37 , Isabel Keane

Donald Trump’s pardon wave has erased more than $119 million in restitution owed to crime victims following a historic streak of pardons for white-collar criminals and political allies accused of fraud and corruption.

The list of fines, compiled by CBS News, does not include nearly $120 million that was owed to the Crime Victims Fund and another $171 million in restitution that is jointly owed with co-defendants who did not receive clemency, bringing the total funds that were denied to victims and the government to more than $1.1 billion over the last two years.

Those fines also don’t include $661 million in restitution owed by the former tech CEO who was convicted of defrauding investors, nor the potentially tens of thousands of dollars that would have likely been owed to the government by the more than 1,500 people charged in connection with the January 6 attack. The president issued rioters a blanket pardon on his first day in office.
