Donald Trump’s bombshell announcement that the United States would “take over” the Gaza Strip and rebuild it as a luxurious “Riviera of the Middle East” has sparked global outrage and raised serious questions about the former president’s grasp of international diplomacy.
His proposal to remove Palestinians from their homeland and replace them with a Western-controlled economic hub borders on modern colonialism. Trump reiterated his call for Jordan, Egypt, and other Arab nations to accept Gazans, asserting that Palestinians had no choice but to leave the coastal strip, which requires reconstruction after nearly 16 months of relentless warfare between Israel and Hamas.
Meanwhile, Malaysian Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim has taken a drastically different approach, pledging to assist in rebuilding Gaza by constructing essential facilities like schools, hospitals, and mosques. These two opposing visions for Gaza: one rooted in economic imperialism, the other in humanitarian aid, highlight the stark contrast in leadership and geopolitical strategy.
Trump’s Gaza Plan: A Colonial Pipe Dream?
Trump’s vision is alarming for several reasons. First, his idea of permanently resettling Gazans in neighboring countries disregards the fundamental right of Palestinians to remain in their homeland. This is not just a relocation plan but rather an endorsement of ethnic displacement under the guise of economic development.
The US President’s rhetoric echoes the language of occupation and Western expansionism, treating Gaza as real estate to be developed rather than a home for millions of Palestinians. If the 'Gaza Economic Hub' vision is truly intended to help Gazans economically, then it will be beneficial to the region.
Even if Trump’s plan were implemented, the idea that the U.S. could unilaterally control and reshape Gaza into a thriving economic hub is deeply flawed. Nation-building has never been America’s strong suit, as seen in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Trump’s disregard for the complex political and humanitarian realities of Gaza makes his proposal more fantasy than feasible policy.
Anwar’s Plan: A More Grounded Approach
On the other hand, Anwar Ibrahim’s approach reflects a more compassionate and realistic vision for Gaza’s future. By working with international partners like Japan through the East Asia Cooperation framework, Malaysia is committing to genuine reconstruction, not occupation. Anwar’s focus on schools, hospitals, and mosques acknowledges the immediate humanitarian needs of Gazans rather than treating the region as a business opportunity.
This approach aligns with the global consensus that Gaza’s future should be determined by Palestinians, not foreign powers imposing their will. Unlike Trump’s imperialistic ambitions, Anwar’s initiative respects Palestinian sovereignty and prioritizes stability over sensationalism.
Gaza’s Future: Colonialism or Cooperation?
Trump’s vision for Gaza sounds more like a real estate developer’s pitch than a serious geopolitical plan. His approach disregards Palestinian rights, fuels regional tensions, and assumes that economic transformation can be imposed without local support.
Anwar’s plan, while modest in scale, represents a more sustainable and ethical path: one that empowers Palestinians rather than erasing them.
Ultimately, Gaza does not need a foreign landlord; it needs allies committed to genuine reconstruction and self-determination. The choice is clear: a future dictated by Trump’s reckless expansionism or one built on international cooperation and Palestinian resilience.
But can Anwar afford to challenge Trump's dominance without jeopardizing Malaysia’s economic ties with the U.S.?
