Trump says a Putin-Zelensky meeting would be ‘great’ and urges both sides to make compromises.
WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump said Thursday it would be “great” for Volodymyr Zelensky to meet Russia’s Vladimir Putin after the Ukrainian president proposed face-to-face talks — but said both sides had to make compromises.
“I’m glad that they’re maybe talking about meeting. I think we had a lot to do with it,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. “I think it would be great if they met. They should — get it done.”
Trump, who has faced criticism for berating Zelensky in the Oval last year on the one hand while inviting Putin to a summit in Alaska, promised to end the Ukraine war within a day of taking office.
He has pushed both sides to end the conflict, but his attention has largely been absorbed by the Iran war that the United States and Israel launched more than three months ago.
“They’re going to both make compromises, I suggested those compromises, and you know, we’ve had a lot to do with it,” Trump said of Ukraine and Russia, without specifying.
