US President Donald Trump has threatened Iran with destruction as diplomatic efforts to broker an agreement to end the war remain deadlocked.

“For Iran, the Clock is Ticking, and they better get moving, FAST, or there won’t be anything left of them," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. "TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE!"

A ceasefire, most recently extended unilaterally by Trump, has been in place since early April. However, recurring regional tensions have repeatedly threatened to derail it, with no sign of progress towards reopening the Strait of Hormuz to shipping.

A lack of progress in diplomatic efforts has also fuelled growing frustration in Washington. Last week, Trump warned the ceasefire was on “massive life support.”

Even after Trump’s trip to Beijing this week, it was unclear whether his visit to China — one of Iran’s key allies — had brought an end to the war any closer.
