US President Donald Trump claims forces stopped a ship carrying a Chinese ‘gift’ to Iran, contradicting earlier assurances from Beijing
WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump said US forces intercepted a ship carrying a “gift” to Iran from China.
He made the claim as Tehran reportedly tries to restock its military during a ceasefire period.
Trump told CNBC the ship had “a gift from China” which “wasn’t very nice.”
“I was a little surprised,” he added, saying he thought he had an “understanding” with China’s President Xi Jinping.
The statement contradicts an assurance Trump announced just a week ago.
He said then that Xi had assured him there would be no Chinese weapons deliveries to Iran, a close partner with Beijing for years.
