US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that US forces would launch another round of strikes on Iran, and threatened to seize Kharg Island as part of a broader effort to "assume total control" of the country's oil and gas markets.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said US forces would hit Iran "VERY HARD TONIGHT."
He added that the United States will "take" Kharg Island, a key hub for Iran's oil industry in The Gulf, and other oil infrastructure "at some point in the not too distant future."
The US president also repeated the claim that Iran's "Navy, Air Force, Radar, Anti Aircraft, and all other forms of Defense, together with most of its offensive capability, are GONE!"
The US and Iran traded a second consecutive night of mutual attacks overnight, with the US military saying on Thursday that its attacks targeted military intelligence facilities, communications systems and air defence positions. Iran responded by targeting US air bases in Bahrain and Kuwait.
