Trump ‘seriously considering’ renaming Lake Ontario as Canada tariffs dispute intensifies

  • President Donald Trump has threatened to rename Lake Ontario to Lake America, stating that the U.S. does not expect to do much business with Ontario amid an escalating trade war.
  • “The United States is giving serious consideration to changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America in that we don’t expect to doing much business with Ontario any longer,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Tuesday morning. “Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
  • The United States recently imposed a 50 percent tariff on roughly $20 billion of Canadian imports after negotiations with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney fell apart last week.
  • Trump further escalated tensions by announcing that 50 percent tariffs will apply to all Canadian automotive imports and steel beginning January 1, 2027, and urging companies to manufacture inside the U.S. instead.
  • Ontario Premier Doug Ford publicly denounced Trump as a bully, dictator, and king of bankruptcies following personal insults from Trump, who previously called Ford a blustering flunky. The escalating conflict threatens deeply integrated cross-border supply chains in autos, energy, and agriculture, leaving business owners and consumers on both sides facing severe financial uncertainty and potential price hikes.
