US President Donald Trump on Thursday set a July 4 cutoff for the European Union to implement a trade deal, threatening to raise tariffs to "much higher levels” if the deadline is not met.

Trump, writing on his Truth Social platform, had what he described as a "great call" with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

He said he has been waiting "patiently for the EU to fulfil their side" of what he called the "Historic Trade Deal."

"A promise was made that the EU would deliver their side of the Deal and, as per Agreement, cut their Tariffs to ZERO!"

Trump said last week that he would impose tariffs of 25% on EU car and truck imports, up from the agreement's 15%, since he said the EU has not complied with the deal.

Now he has agreed to give von der Leyen until the US celebrates its 250th birthday - or July 4 - to fulfil its side of the deal or "their Tariffs would immediately jump to much higher levels."
