Donald Trump threatens 200% tariffs on French wine and champagne after France signals it will decline to join his proposed “Board of Peace.”
WASHINGTON: Donald Trump threatened 200% tariffs on French wine and champagne on Monday.
The threat came in response to France’s intention to decline an invitation to join the US leader’s proposed “Board of Peace.”
The board was originally conceived to oversee the rebuilding of war-torn Gaza.
Its charter, however, does not appear to limit its role solely to the occupied Palestinian territory.
“I’ll put a 200 percent tariff on his wines and champagnes,” Trump said, referring to French President Emmanuel Macron.
“He’ll join. But he doesn’t have to join,” he added.
A source close to Macron told AFP that France “does not intend to answer favorably” to the invitation.
The source stated the board’s charter “goes beyond the sole framework of Gaza.”
Trump also confirmed he had invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to join the board.
“Yes, he’s been invited,” Trump told a reporter in Florida.
