KUALA LUMPUR – Perikatan Nasional (PN) should stop politicising the agreement signed by coalitions to support the unity government and renew its bid to take over Putrajaya in the next general election, Umno Youth chief Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said.
He said the agreement signed yesterday, requiring all MPs in government parties to support Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in the upcoming confidence motion as well as in supply bills or procedural motions, was aimed at ensuring political stability for the next term.
“Enough of the politicking and polemics. Focus on building the country’s future and solving the people’s problems.
“In five years’ time, return to the arena again to fight in the general election,” Asyraf said in a Facebook post.
PN chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as well as Bersatu Srikandi vice-chief Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin today denounced the agreement, calling it unconstitutional and invalid.
They also said it was “dictatorial” as MPs who fail to support motions that affect the federal government’s stability would be deemed to have resigned, thus triggering the loss of their seats according to anti-party hopping provisions in the federal constitution.
Muhyiddin also said the agreement prevented MPs from voting according to conscience and societal values.
The political party coalitions of Pakatan Harapan, Barisan Nasional, Gabungan Parti Sarawak, Gabungan Rakyat Sabah, and Warisan yesterday signed an agreement in Putrajaya to seal their cooperation in the unity government.
Other objectives contained in the agreement include upholding the supremacy and rule of law, the independence of the judiciary and public institutions, and the effectiveness and professionalism of security forces.
The agreement also spells out the need to strengthen the principle of separation of powers between the executive, legislative and judicial branches so that the federal government system has strong checks and balances to prevent centralisation of power and abuse. – The Vibes, December 17, 2022
