Tuaran programme showcases practical approach to social unity

TUARAN: Social unity must be translated into daily life through mutual understanding, respect and cooperation among communities, said Sabah Government Teachers' Union (KGKS) president Murkam Hussein.

Officiating the Tuaran District-level Social Unity Outreach Programme 2026 at Linangkit Cultural Village (LCV) here on Saturday, he said the programme demonstrated how unity could be practised through community engagement and shared activities.

"This programme is not only about talking about unity, but showing how unity can be translated into daily life," he said.

Murkam said Sabah's harmonious multicultural society remained one of the State's greatest strengths, with communities continuing to celebrate diversity while maintaining close social ties.

"We can sit at the same table, eat together, celebrate each other's festivals and help our neighbours without focusing on our differences," he said.

He said development should not be measured solely through infrastructure, economic growth and technology, but also through efforts to strengthen people, communities and social trust.

Murkam encouraged youths to take advantage of educational opportunities available through the programme, including exhibitions and career-related information, to help shape their future aspirations.

"Young people must be brave enough to learn, ask questions, gain experience and seize opportunities that can help build their future," he said.

He also highlighted the programme's blood donation campaign, financial management workshop and community outreach activities, saying such initiatives helped foster a caring, informed and resilient society.

Murkam said preserving cultural heritage, strengthening community participation and promoting volunteerism were important foundations for a united, progressive and harmonious Sabah.
