Tuaran: The Tuaran Tanglung Festival 2026 serves as a platform to strengthen unity among Sabah’s multiracial communities and foster mutual respect for cultural diversity, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.
“This festival is the best space for us to strengthen the spirit of unity and mutual respect for the cultures of the various races in this State,” he said at the festival’s opening ceremony at Padang Tuaran, here recently.
His speech was delivered by Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau.
Hajiji said the State Government sees the diversity of cultures, customs and celebrations in this state as its most valuable asset.
“When we respect one another and share in the joy of other communities’ celebrations, we are building a strong bridge of unity,” he said.
“Sabah is well known for its multiracial, multi-religious and multicultural society. We may differ in culture and tradition, but we share one home and that is Sabah.
“Efforts like this not only bring life to Tuaran but also serve as a platform to bring together people from all backgrounds in a harmonious and cordial atmosphere.
“I hope events like the Tuaran Tanglung Festival will continue to grow and become part of Tuaran’s annual calendar of events.
“We want to see more visitors come to Tuaran and more opportunities given to local entrepreneurs, small traders, artists and the youth.
“We want our young people to continue to know, appreciate and defend the cultural heritage we have.
“Progress does not mean forgetting our culture and our roots. Instead, culture can be a strength for Sabah’s economic and tourism development,” Hajiji said.
He said Tuaran has great potential in tourism, culture, the creative economy, and community development, which could help the festival grow into an annual event for the district.
He added that the State Government is committed to supporting cultural programmes so the younger generation does not forget their cultural roots.
He also hoped the Lions Club of Tuaran would continue to play an active role as a community partner.
