TUARAN: Reconstruction work on the Tuaran Township–Sungai Damit Bridge is scheduled to begin in early September following approval under the Fifth Rolling Plan of the 12th Malaysia Plan.

The RM30 million project, overseen by the Sabah Economic Development and Investment Authority (Sedia), will be implemented by the Sabah Public Works Department (PWD).

According to the Economy Ministry, the contractor appointment process is in its final stages and is expected to be completed by August.

The ministry provided the update in a written parliamentary reply to Tuaran MP Datuk Seri Madius Tangau on Tuesday.

Madius had asked for the latest status of the bridge project, including estimated start and completion dates.

It was reported that the Tuaran Township–Sungai Damit bridge was approved on March 24, 2017, under the Second Rolling Plan of the 11th Malaysia Plan with an allocation of RM18 million.

The project was implemented by the Sabah PWD and initially supervised by Sedia under the Prime Minister’s Department, before being placed under the Economy Ministry.

Following structural safety concerns, the bridge was declared unsafe and, in 2022, the Task Force Damit recommended it be rebuilt at the same location based on safety, durability, and value-for-money considerations.
