“Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman is allowed to stop supporting the government if he believes the Unity Government has betrayed its commitment,” said the former prime minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad.

According to Utusan, the former leader of Pakatan Harapan (PH) declined to comment on what he meant by the matter of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's pledges that were not kept.

The current scenario of the Unity Government, which is viewed as being so vulnerable, duplicating the circumstances of the previous administration era was not even mentioned by Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad.

"The Muar MP is capable of doing that. Syed Saddiq told reporters after participating in the Statesman Week discussion panel in conjunction with Independence Month 2023 that he (Syed Saddiq) believes in what the bloc's leadership pledged, but if they don't keep their word, he can leave.

As the leader of the Malaysian Democratic Alliance Party (Muda) and the surprise announcement of his party's withdrawal from the Unity Government last Sunday, Syed Saddiq expressed his opposition to the court's decision to free Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi from 47 criminal charges without acquitting him.

The Unity Government unexpectedly found itself lacking a two-thirds majority in the Dewan Rakyat because it lacked one seat out of 222 available seats due to MUDA’s exit.

Only 147 MPs make up the block that was created as a result of 14 parties working together, while Perikatan Nasional (PN), the opposition, holds 74 seats.

In the General Election (GE) of 2008, Barisan Nasional (BN) lost its two-thirds majority for the first time by only defending 140 seats.

The group attempted to accomplish this once more during the 2013 general election when it gained 133 seats before losing to PH in 2018 who only garnered 121 MPs.

The political instability of the country continued during last year's GE which saw PH gain 82 seats compared to PN with 74 seats and BN 30 seats.
