Former PM Tun Dr Mahathir, 100, suffers right hip fracture in fall at home, now stable at IJN hospital

PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, is receiving medical care at the National Heart Institute (IJN) in Kuala Lumpur after sustaining a fractured right hip from a fall at his home.

The 100-year-old statesman’s press secretary, Sufi Yusoff, confirmed that medical evaluations identified the hip injury. He is anticipated to remain hospitalised for several weeks for treatment and medical observation.

“Tun Dr Mahathir remains in stable condition and is conscious. Medical professionals are keeping him under close watch as a precautionary step,” Sufi stated.

The incident occurred at approximately 7.30am at his residence. He was transported to IJN and arrived at the facility around 9.30am, remaining alert throughout.

Sufi indicated that additional information regarding the former leader’s condition will be shared when appropriate.

Dr Mahathir, who turned 100 recently, served as Malaysia’s prime minister twice—from 1981 to 2003 and again from 2018 to 2020—making him the world’s oldest serving leader during his second tenure.
