In his blog post dated July 31, 2025, former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad took aim at Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s recent challenge to the opposition, where Anwar invited his rivals to table a no-confidence motion in Parliament if they intended to unseat his government.
Dr. Mahathir reacted with a tone of sarcasm to the perceived bravado, implying that Anwar’s challenge lacked genuine courage. He argued that support for Anwar within the Dewan Rakyat appeared to be driven less by conviction and more by fear of consequences. According to Mahathir, several Members of Parliament backing Anwar do so under pressure, with some allegedly facing the threat of legal action or withdrawal of financial allocations if they fail to toe the line.
He suggested that this climate of fear was the true reason Anwar might survive a no-confidence motion, rather than any meaningful loyalty or endorsement from within his coalition. Dr. Mahathir further claimed that even UMNO members who participated in a recent large-scale rally were subject to warnings and intimidation, an indication, he implied, of insecurity within the ruling bloc.
Going further, Mahathir posed a counter-challenge to Anwar: instead of daring the opposition to bring down the government through parliamentary procedures, he urged the Prime Minister to dissolve Parliament and call for a general election. He reasoned that if Anwar was as confident as his inner circle portrayed—particularly those who downplayed the size of the rally by reporting only 15,000 attendees—then a fresh mandate would be easy to secure.
The veteran statesman also questioned the legitimacy of Anwar’s rise to the premiership, claiming it was achieved not through the people's will, but by halting a criminal case involving a key figure in order to secure political backing.
Mahathir closed his argument by insisting that only a general election could accurately reflect public sentiment and confirm whether Anwar truly has the democratic support of Malaysians. In his view, a new election would settle lingering doubts and restore public confidence in the nation's leadership through a transparent and fair process.
