Former PM Tun Mahathir finally spoke out against inviting Najib, the convict to the royal palace.

He said that “convicts” should not be at palace functions, “My feeling is that a convict should not be invited to the palace. It’s not right, and it’s not nice because it shows as if the convict has got some support from the palace.”

We the public have expressed our dismay when Najib was seen at “buka puasa” and Hari Raya” functions with the Agong this year.

Also, we did wonder whether the “convict has got some support from the palace”. But as ordinary citizens we are unable to speak out as loudly as Tun M who is able to voice his opinions publicly to the press for the whole world to hear and take notice.

It took more than a month after the events before he made his comment publicly on Najib’s presence at the palace on those two occasions. We are glad he did.

On the other hand, Najib had dismissed Tun M as being irrelevant.

However, we beg to differ. Tun M is still relevant and so are his concerns about having convicts in royal palaces.

Perhaps it is Najib who ought to look at himself in the mirror and ask the same question about being relevant within a society that does not appreciate seeing convicts at royal functions.

Hassan Karim Pasir Gudang’s MP expressed a similar opinion one day before Tun M spoke out against the convict’s appearance at the palace by asking, wasn’t there anyone who would come forward to advise the Yang di-Pertuan Agong not to invite former PM Najib Razak to Istana Negara?

After all, the YDPA, he said is surrounded by various advisers and has access to the Attorney General who acts as a lawyer for the government.

MP like Hassan is the conscience of the rakyat, speaking out against what is wrong with the country’s policy and protocols.

But only Tun M has the guts to tell the monarchs in the past and they did take him seriously then.

I hope they still see the relevance of his comments and not that of Najib’s who is already convicted with seven charges of misappropriation of RM42 million in SRC International funds and sentenced to 12 years in jail and fined RM210 million in a judgment upheld by the Court of Appeal in December 2021, but now appealing at the Federal Court.

But Hassan is right the advisers ought to guide YDPA to heed concerns expressed by more respectable statesmen like Tun M and seriously consider the overall views of the rakyat.

By inviting a convict to the palace you are not sending out the right signal to the people and to the rest of the world that is already rapidly losing their respect for our country caused largely by the criminal in question.
