Former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad is up to his political ploy yet again issuing a stark warning recently stating that if Umno were to gain complete control of the government, taxpayers' money could go astray
It's surprising that Tun Mahathir should be bringing up the issue of corruption in Umno since Malaysians are quite well aware of the party's history of financial mismanagement and abuse of power.
Anyway, with Umno's upcoming plans to organize a Malay Congress, Dr. Mahathir emphasized that the party's long-standing association with corruption it might just be a strategy to get votes from Malays who have been behind the party since independence but chose to go against it when it was led by Najib who is now in jail for the same reason.
"Umno intends to establish a Malay congress, but what were they doing all along? Umno's strategy to secure voters has always relied on money politics, involving the distribution of cash and the excessive display of flags and banners," Dr. Mahathir voiced during a press conference held at Sama-Sama Hotel in Sepang.
He further cautioned that if Umno were to emerge victorious in the next general election and lead the federal government once again, it would spell doom for the Malays. Dr. Mahathir asserted that corruption has been an entrenched issue within the party, which he himself led for over 20 years.
Dr. Mahathir also drew attention to the resurgence of the "Malaysian Malaysia" concept, first introduced by Lee Kuan Yew in 1964. He argued that the rights of the Malays have been gradually eroded over the years and cautioned that if all races in Malaysia were to enjoy equal rights, it would lead to dire consequences.
"The essence of the Malays would diminish if the 'Malaysian Malaysia' concept were implemented, similar to what happened in Singapore, where English became the primary medium of instruction in schools. If you were to ask Singaporean Malays, they would struggle to respond in Malay. This poses a threat to Malays in our country," Dr. Mahathir expressed.
Dr. Mahathir's remarks shed light on his concerns about Umno's potential governance, corruption tendencies, and the preservation of Malay language and culture. However, we suspect that Tun Mahathir's warning against Umno's plan to hold a Malay Congress might be in competition with his own movement on Malay Proclamation that is now endorsed by almost all parties in the opposition. Similarly, his reference to LKY's Malaysian Malaysia we suspect is revived here, precisely to rally Malays towards his Malay Proclamation agenda.
As political dynamics continue to evolve, these views contribute to the ongoing discussions surrounding Malaysia's political landscape and the potential future direction it may take and Tun Mahathir is not about to set aside his agenda on Malay Proclamation designed to unite all Malays for a new government coalition perhaps without Umno as a leading party.
