Sarawak has suffered a great loss with the departure of the former Yang di-Pertua Negeri, Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, who died peacefully at the age of 87.
Tun Taib's daughter, Datuk Hanifah Hajjar Taib, disclosed that he died at 4:40 a.m. in a private hospital in Kuala Lumpur, as reported by TVS.
Recently, the former governor’s stepson expressed his love for his late stepfather. Nizar uploaded a video of him visiting the late Taib’s graveyard, which is in the compound of their mansion.
“I’m here in our graveyard at home, my beautiful home. I’m here to see my father for the second time. I just came back from breakfast.
“I woke up a bit early, so I told myself I would go have breakfast and come back and sit here with my father. We used to watch a lot of movies together, like a lot. I’m talking about hundreds of movies. It was one of our hobbies together,” said Nizar.
“It was something that we enjoyed doing together, and I wish we could still do it. I swear to God, I’m going to put a TV in this graveyard, and we are going to watch movies together.
“Dad, I miss you so much, and I love you so much. I can't believe you are gone. Dad, you are the greatest politician ever—the best politician in Malaysia. No doubt. You know, Dad, you are a genius and a mastermind. You made Sarawak, united all these people here, and made it the strongest state in Malaysia.
“And people just don't like to admit that, do they? You are the reason Malaysia is what it is today. Anyway, father, I wish you were back, and I hope you are doing well wherever you are. I hope you can hear me. If you can't, that would be sad. I love you so much,” said Nizar, as shared on his TikTok account.
Throughout his extraordinary years as a leader, Tun Taib—a genuine emblem of compassion and wisdom—has profoundly impacted countless people.
He held the post of Chief Minister of Sarawak for an astounding 33 years, from March 1981 to February 2014, his legacy is unmatched in Malaysian history.
