Tune Talk appoints former Deputy Police Chief to lead child online safety push

Tune Talk has officially appointed Dato’ Sasikala Devi Subramaniam, former Deputy Chief Police Officer of Selangor, as the Brand Ambassador for its Epik+ Family Safe plan.

The appointment aims to raise public awareness around child online safety by drawing on her extensive public safety background.

Through this initiative, both parties hope to encourage parents to adopt practical, preventive safeguards rather than reacting only after digital harm occur.

With over 35 years in the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) including senior roles in the Commercial Crime and Narcotics Crime Investigation Departments, Dato’ Sasikala brings first-hand public safety insights into digital risks.

Dato’ Sasikala emphasized that child safety should begin right at the connectivity layer. While acknowledging recent legislative developments such as the Online Safety Act and social media age restrictions for children under 16, she noted that regulation alone cannot fully protect children. She advocated for prevention by design, emphasizing first-phone education, family digital agreements, privacy safeguards, and improved digital literacy for parents and children.

A quick rewind on Tune Talk Epik+ Family Safe

First launched in June 2026, Tune Talk introduced Epik+ Family Safe as Malaysia’s first prepaid family plan featuring built-in, network-level parental controls. Unlike app-based or device-level parental controls, protection is applied directly on the mobile network layer, meaning restrictions cannot be bypassed by changing phone settings or using VPNs.

The plan features three adjustable protection levels (Low, Medium, and High) that allow parents to block up to 56 categories of content including adult material, gambling, social media, and bypass tools or pause internet access with a single tap. Priced from RM80 per month for one Parent and one Child line, the plan provides a 700GB pool of uncapped 5G data, unlimited local calls, and free e-Roaming across 13 countries.

Technology as one layer of protection

Dato’ Sasikala noted that while network filters provide a strong foundation, technology remains just one component of a broader child safety ecosystem alongside ongoing parental conversation, digital literacy, and enforcement.

Tune Talk Co-founder and CEO Gurtaj Singh Padda stated that the collaboration aims to provide practical guidance for families navigating rapid digital changes, helping parents move from awareness to action. Tune Talk added that it will continue engaging parents, educators, civil society organizations, and policymakers to advocate for safer digital practices across Malaysia.
