A DEEPLY emotional scene unfolded today as the Tunku Laksamana Johor Cancer Centre and Hospital officially opened its doors in Larkin, Johor, with His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, visibly moved while watching a commemorative montage honouring his late son, Tunku Abdul Jalil Sultan Ibrahim.
The montage reflected cherished moments between Tunku Abdul Jalil, His Majesty, and the Johor Royal Family, marking a decade since the prince passed away from stage four liver cancer at the age of 25 on December 5, 2015, at Sultanah Aminah Hospital.
The state-of-the-art facility, situated opposite the Sultan Ismail Library, offers a range of advanced medical services, including a Positron Emission Tomography (PET) CT scanner, Linear Accelerator, Cyclotron, as well as Theranostics and Gene Therapy treatments, aiming to provide cutting-edge cancer care to the people of Johor.
Mala Mail cited that His Majesty arrived at the opening ceremony at 8.57am, accompanied by Raja Permaisuri Agong Raja Zarith Sofiah, the Regent of Johor Tunku Mahkota Ismail, and Che’ Puan Mahkota Khaleeda Johor.
Members of the Royal Family present included Tunku Putera Johor Tunku Abu Bakar Al-Haj Sultan Ibrahim, Tunku Panglima Johor Tunku Abdul Rahman Al-Haj Sultan Ibrahim, and Tunku Temenggong Johor Tunku Idris Iskandar Al-Haj Sultan Ibrahim. Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi was also in attendance.
“I hereby officiate the launch of the Tunku Laksamana Johor Cancer Centre,” Sultan Ibrahim declared as he formally opened the medical facility, reflecting the personal significance of the occasion.
The event began with a speech by the centre’s director, Dr William Chong, who emphasised the institution’s commitment to delivering high-quality care across all communities.
“We are committed and we pledge to provide advanced medical services for all communities, especially Bangsa Johor. We will not neglect low-income households and will set aside enough time, space, and resources to help all in the state,” he said.
Dr Chong further highlighted the installation of a new cyclotron to benefit the public, reinforcing the centre’s mission to ensure accessibility of advanced cancer treatments to lower-income groups.
Johor Health and Environment Committee chairman Ling Tian Soon remarked that the opening of the centre represents a significant milestone in strengthening the state’s healthcare infrastructure while also enhancing Johor’s appeal as a medical tourism destination.
The launch ceremony included the unveiling of the Tunku Laksamana Johor Cancer Centre logo and the signing of the official plaque, marking the formal inauguration of the facility named in memory of a beloved prince whose legacy continues to inspire public service and healthcare advancement in the state. - December 5, 2025
