Kota Kinabalu: Marine turtles’ natural nest has a more significant hatching success compared to hatcheries, said Ecosystem Management Specialist under the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources and Energy (Menre) of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region for Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), Minda J Bairulla.
Citing the monitoring conducted in the Turtle Islands Wildlife Sanctuary (TIWS), comprising six islands under the supervision of BARMM – Baguan, Taganak, Bakkungan, Boan, Langaan and Lihiman, she said it was found that in the hatchery, the hatching success is about 60 per cent.
“In natural nests, the hatching success is between 92 to 99 per cent,” she said when presenting a paper on TIWS at the Turtle Islands Heritage Protected Area (TIHPA) Conference 2023, here, recently.
