Thousands flooded the streets of Kuala Lumpur over the weekend, chanting demands for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s resignation in what was branded as the “Turun Anwar” rally.

While the optics suggested a growing unrest, a closer look reveals the gathering lacked the credibility, leadership, and genuine grassroots momentum necessary to become a true turning point in Malaysia’s political landscape.

Organised and led predominantly by the Opposition bloc, the rally was more political drama than people’s movement. It wasn’t a spontaneous outcry of public frustration, but a carefully curated event spearheaded by figures who themselves are struggling to gain moral ground. Many of the rally’s speakers, including former ministers and opposition politicians, are seen by the public as lacking credibility, integrity, and even dignity: making their calls for reform and to take over the government ring hollow.

Rather than focusing on logical, policy-driven grievances, organisers relied heavily on stoking negative sentiments and emotional triggers to draw crowds. “Turun Anwar” became more of a viral slogan than a movement with substance. For many participants, particularly younger attendees, it felt more like a weekend escape: a picnic protest in the city centre rather than a resolute political stand.

That said, the sizeable turnout - especially from the Malay heartland - sends a clear message to Anwar Ibrahim: his coalition is losing traction among the very demographic he must win over to retain legitimacy. The Prime Minister, who rose to power on the back of progressive Malay and non-Malay voters alike, risks alienating both ends of the spectrum. The rural Malay base continues to view him with scepticism, largely due to lingering stigma from past sodomy charges, even though the courts have cleared him or proceedings remain unresolved. His attempts to project himself as a champion of Malay-Muslim causes both domestically and internationally appear unconvincing to this audience.

In response to the rally, Anwar issued a calm and statesmanlike reminder to his opponents: Parliament, not the streets, is the rightful place for Members of Parliament (MPs) to debate policies and air grievances. In a Facebook post, he reaffirmed his commitment to democratic principles and freedom of speech.

He stated that criticism and differences of opinion should be encouraged and seen as vital components of a mature, progressive, and sovereign society - not simply as acts of opposition. This shows a leader willing to engage in discourse but expecting it through the proper channels of governance.

At the same time, his progressive supporters are growing disillusioned with his perceived compromises and political accommodations. If Anwar does not pivot towards more reform-driven governance, uphold transparency, and push through key institutional changes as promised, his support base may continue to erode.

In truth, the “Turun Anwar” rally was more of a warning shot than a political reckoning. While it did not possess the bite to force a resignation or policy overhaul, it highlighted a widening trust deficit and political fatigue. Anwar would do well not to dismiss the protest as mere noise. Even a hollow drum, when struck repeatedly, can echo loud enough to shake the walls of Putrajaya.
