In the age of information, headlines serve as the gateway to our understanding of current events. Yet, they also hold the power to shape perceptions and influence public opinion. This article delves into the critical examination of media practices and the potential for headlines to mislead and manipulate. It underscores the responsibility of media outlets to present news in a manner that is both accurate and devoid of bias, ensuring that the public receives a truthful representation of events without being swayed by sensationalism or inflammatory language. This article hopes to set the stage for a thought-provoking discussion on the ethical implications of headline writing and its impact on society.
On the 5th of June 2024, both TV3 and Sinchew reported the same piece of news but with different headlines. TV3's headline was ‘Lembaga Sekolah, PIBG SMJK dan SMC di Pulau Pinang bantah penggunaan Bahasa Melayu di kelas’ which when translated into English is ‘The School Board, PIBG SMJK, and SMC in Penang oppose the use of Malay in class.' In contrast, the headline for Sinchew is ‘槟11华中董事会家协联署促撤强制开国语数理班’ which when translated into English is ‘11 Penang SMJK Board and PIBG signed to urge the removal of the compulsory teaching of Science and Maths in Malay’.
As you can see, the headline for Sinchew is direct and straight to the point; they even mentioned that they (The School Board, PIBG SMJK and SMC in Penang) objected to making Malay the medium of instruction for Science and Maths. On the other hand, TV3’s headline stated that the parties involved “oppose the use of Malay in class,” which is not true at all! To add insult to injury, the first 2 paragraphs of the article by TV3 also misled the public as it did not mention the Dual Language Programme. For context, the Dual Language Programme (DLP) is a programme under the government's initiative to 'Empower Bahasa Malaysia and Strengthen English' policy, similar to a Bilingual Program. The Dual Language Programme (DLP) aims to offer students the chance to learn Science and Mathematics in either English or Malay. However, a new directive from the Education Ministry requires schools to conduct at least one class (of either Science or Mathematics) in Bahasa Malaysia (BM) if they wish to adopt the DLP.
The Education Ministry’s recent directive presents a challenge for SMJK Chung Ling’s students where around 400 Form One students express their desire to learn Science and Mathematics in English. Foo Wan P’ng, the secretary of the Chung Ling board of directors, noted that parents overwhelmingly favor teaching both subjects in English, as was the case in the earlier DLP. Foo Wan P'ng represented 11 SMJK and Chinese secondary schools in Penang that were not in favour of the latest directive where at least one class must be set up for Science and Mathematics to be taught in BM, as a prerequisite for the DLP to be conducted. This was the reason for their opposition and in no way do they “oppose the use of Malay in class”. Bear in mind that this is not a racial issue as back in April 2024, parents of various races organized a silent protest outside SK Bukit Damansara in Kuala Lumpur due to the scaling back of the Dual Language Programme (DLP) at the school, which has caused concern among them.
TV3 has since taken down the article on the basis of the headline “not being accurate and potentially causing confusion". They have also apologized for the article. Nevertheless, this incident highlights the importance of ACTUALLY reading the news article and not judging a news article on its headlines. We must always remember that headlines can be misleading and that it is our responsibility to seek out accurate information. As we navigate through an era where information is abundant, let us commit to being discerning consumers of news, ensuring that we are informed by facts rather than swayed by sensationalist headlines.
