Zahid urges TVET graduates to master AI, data and digital technology while developing problem-solving, communication and ethical skills

TANJONG MALIM: Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) graduates need to master artificial intelligence (AI), data, and digital technology to advance further in the workforce, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Ahmad Zahid, who is also the chairman of the National TVET Council, said such mastery must be accompanied by the ability to solve problems, communicate effectively, and exercise ethical judgment.

“We want graduates who know how to use technology effectively while remaining courteous and responsible,” he said in his speech at the Central Zone Polytechnic and Community College Convocation Ceremony held at the Tuanku Canselor Hall, Sultan Idris Education University (UPSI), here today.

Ahmad Zahid added that polytechnics and community colleges (POLYCC) must strengthen applied innovation in collaboration with the industry.

He noted that projects with potential need to be tested in real-world settings, refined, and brought to market.

“For instance, a smart irrigation system developed by students could be tested with farmers to reduce water wastage and ease their workload.

“This is where institutions and the industry need to provide guidance and a pathway for commercialisation,” he said.

He also stated that POLYCC must continue to strengthen flexible learning, lifelong learning, and the recognition of prior learning so that those who are employed or have family commitments also have the opportunity to upskill.

Furthermore, he said that opening pathways for more graduates to establish their own enterprises could produce graduates who not only master skills but also build businesses.

“Look at Noor Azree Aiman, a graduate of Ampang Community College who founded ASZR Legacy, a business specialising in phone repairs.

“Armed with entrepreneurial skills and guidance, he expanded the business by opening two additional branches and providing employment to local youths,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Central Zone convocation ceremony, held from September 24 to October 1, brought together 6,862 graduates from POLYCC institutions in the Central Zone.

The first session today involved graduates from the Civil Engineering Department (JKA) and the Electrical Engineering Department (JKE), as well as graduates from the Liuzhou Railway Vocational Technical College (LRTVC).
