Two men on trial in Malaysia escaped from the Kulim Court Complex by sliding down a pillar and climbing over a boundary fence after spotting police waiting to rearrest them.

PETALING JAYA: The grounds of the Kulim Court Complex were thrown into a commotion today when two men, both accused persons (OKTs), allegedly escaped while policemen from the Seberang Perai Selatan District Police Headquarters (IPD) were attempting to rearrest them.

The incident was also widely circulated on social media today.

Kulim district police chief Superintendent Syamsul Sinring confirmed the incident, which occurred at about 10am.

He said initial investigations found that both men had appeared at the Kulim Magistrates’ Court for a case mention involving a police report from Serdang, with charges under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt using a dangerous weapon or instrument, as well as Section 353 of the Penal Code.

“The duo were charged at the Kulim Magistrates’ Court on April 30 and were granted bail pending trial.

“The first accused, aged 27, was granted bail of RM4,000, while the second accused, aged 31, was granted bail of RM3,000.

“The case was subsequently fixed for mention on June 8, July 12 and today for the submission of documents and case management,” he said in a statement today.

Syamsul said that after completing the case mention proceedings in the judge’s chambers, including case management and the submission of documents, both accused left the court through the rear entrance.

He said they then noticed the presence of policemen from the Seberang Perai Selatan police headquarters at the front entrance of the court.

“Following this, one of the accused immediately fled within the court compound and climbed down a pillar from the first floor of the Kulim Court.

“The other accused went back inside the building before fleeing through the rear passage of the court compound,” he said.

Syamsul said both accused subsequently escaped through the rear of the court by climbing over a fence.
