Two alleged loan shark runners jailed 18 months, fined RM20k each for harassing borrowers

TWO men accused of acting on behalf of illegal moneylenders were sentenced to a total of 18 months' imprisonment and fined RM20,000 each after pleading guilty to harassing borrowers in two separate incidents earlier this year.

Khairul Helmy Abd Karim, 39, and Mohamad Irwan Abdul Halim, 43, entered their guilty pleas after the charges were read before Magistrate Noor Farah Hazwani Osman.

Under the first charge, the pair were accused of acting with a common intention to harass a borrower by splashing red paint on his car at Taman Sri Putra at about 3.30am on March 14.

The second charge alleged that they jointly harassed another borrower by splashing yellow paint on a Naza Forte car and the gate of a house in Taman Berjaya at about 5.30am on April 21.

The offences were prosecuted under Section 29(B)(2) of the Moneylenders Act 1951, read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code.

The provision carries a penalty of a fine ranging from RM10,000 to RM50,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both upon conviction.

For the first offence, the court sentenced each accused to eight months' imprisonment and imposed a RM10,000 fine. Failure to pay the fine would result in an additional three months' imprisonment.

For the second offence, each man received a 10-month jail sentence and another RM10,000 fine, with a further four months' imprisonment in default of payment.

The sentences amount to a total of 18 months' imprisonment and RM20,000 in fines for each accused.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Noor Hazwani Md Noor appeared for the prosecution, while Nur Farahin Saad from the National Legal Aid Foundation (YBGK) represented both accused. - July 16, 2026
