Two commercial drivers, a timber lorry and taxi driver, were arrested after testing positive for drugs at Gombak Toll Plaza.

KUALA LUMPUR: Two men, a timber lorry driver and a taxi driver, were arrested after testing positive for drugs during an integrated drug operation at the Gombak Toll Plaza here today.

Kuala Lumpur Federal Territory Road Transport Department (JPJ WPKL) director Hamidi Adam said that both drivers, aged 31 and 41, were detained by the National Anti-Drug Agency (NADA) after failing the initial urine screening test.

“They tested positive for drugs, specifically methamphetamine and marijuana. The JPJ will take action to suspend both drivers’ licences under Section 36 of the Road Transport Act 1987 if confirmed as addicts,” he said in a statement.

Earlier, the integrated operation involving 59 members from various agencies focused on inspecting commercial vehicle drivers to ensure they comply with the law and are free from drug abuse.

Hamidi said that during the operation, 228 commercial vehicles were inspected, with 75 notices issued for various traffic offences, and a stop-and-go bus was also seized for further action.

He said the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) that participated in the operation also inspected 36 tourist vehicles and detected one case of failure to use a tour guide service.

The offence is being investigated under the Tourism Industry Regulations 1992, which can result in a maximum fine of RM50,000 or imprisonment for up to five years, or both, if convicted.

Hamidi reminded transportation companies to monitor and ensure that their hired drivers are free from drug influence or face strict legal action if they fail to comply with licence conditions.
