Search for two divers missing off Terengganu’s Redang Island suspended due to rough seas, with operation to resume Friday morning

KUALA NERUS: A search and rescue operation for two missing divers at Pasir Akar Marine Park off Redang Island was suspended Thursday evening due to rough sea conditions.

The operation, involving multiple agencies and volunteers, will resume on Friday morning.

Police identified the missing individuals as a 31-year-old Malaysian man from Kajang and a 42-year-old Chinese national.

It is understood one of the individuals is a dive master while the other is a student diver.

Kuala Terengganu district police chief ACP Azli Mohd Noor said police received a report about the incident at about 12.45 pm.

A rescue boat from the Terengganu Fisheries Department was deployed with seven divers from the police and Marine Park at 2 pm.

The operation was assisted by seven volunteers from a local resort using two private boats.

Azli said the search also covered surrounding areas including Pulau Bidong, Pulau Geluk and Pulau Tenggorak.

“As of the suspension of the operation this evening, the two divers have yet to be found,” he said when contacted.

He added that any further developments will be announced in due course.
