KUNAK: Two drivers escaped unhurt after a diesel tanker rear-ended a four-wheel-drive vehicle and overturned along Jalan Kunak–Lahad Datu on Saturday afternoon.
Kunak police chief Supt Rejali Angong said the accident occurred at around 3.30pm on a downhill bend near the Sungai Tingkayu bridge at Kilometre 21.
Initial investigations revealed that the Toyota Hilux driver had slowed down and stopped to give way to oncoming traffic due to a broken-down vehicle ahead.
A diesel tanker tailgating the four-wheel drive failed to avoid the vehicle in time, crashing into its rear before overturning onto the road shoulder.
Rejali said the case is being investigated under Rule 10 of the Road Traffic Rules 1959 (LN 166/59), as he reminded road users to maintain a safe following distance on downhill bends.
