Kota Kinabalu: Two men linked to “Geng Gurun” were each sentenced to 11 years’ imprisonment and ordered to be given four strokes of the cane by the Sessions Court here on Thursday for committing gang robbery involving losses of RM105,000 against a teenager.
Judge Amir Shah Amir Hassan meted out the sentence to Filipino Sahiron Redzgilul, 34, and local Cyril John Paniah, 43, after both maintained their guilty pleas to robbing the 19-year-old victim at a house in Taman Austral at 6.45am on Aug 27 this year.
The court heard that Sahiron, Cyril, and two accomplices, still at large, had trespassed into the rented house while the victim was alone, where Sahiron threatened her with a screwdriver to compel her to surrender her money to Cyril while the others ransacked the premises.
The unrepresented duo took a hybrid video game console, two handbags, and a wallet before fleeing the scene, leaving the victim traumatised.
Sahiron and Cyril, who pleaded for leniency, citing personal responsibilities, were arrested on Oct 10 following a scuffle with police as they attempted to flee.
