Two held in connection with Ranau church break-ins

RANAU: Two illegal immigrants have been remanded for seven days to assist police investigations into two separate break-in and theft cases involving churches in the district.

The remand orders were issued following separate applications by police under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

In the first case, an 18-year-old Filipino man was remanded over an alleged break-in at St. Antonius Pertapa Catholic Church in Kampung Toupus.

Following investigations, officers from the Criminal Investigation Division of the Ranau District Police Headquarters arrested the suspect by the roadside near Km 7, Jalan Ranau-Telupid, at about 3.20pm on July 1.

In the second case, police obtained a seven-day remand against a 30-year-old Suluk, who was found without any identification documents, in connection with an alleged break-in at St. John Paul II Church in Kampung Nalapak.

Police investigations revealed that the church fence had allegedly been cut before the suspect gained access to the premises.

Among the items reported missing were an electric Yamaha drum set and approximately RM2,000 from the church’s donation fund, with the total losses yet to be fully determined.
